Latest News 10/10/11
After the recent traumatic events it was time to try to move on this past week. The U16 footballers played the championship semi-final against Ilen Og on Wednesday 5th in Castlehaven. While everyone put in a good effort it was a night when individually and collectively few were at their best and victory went to the better team on the score 2-7 to 0-8. Good luck to Ilen in the final.
On Saturday afternoon Kilmacabea junior footballers got a late season morale boost when they overcame Gabriel Rangers in the league semi-final in Ballydehob. An early goal by Joe Collins gave Kilmacs a bit of a cushion. Gabriels were picking off the points with the aid of the breeze in the second quarter when Ger O Donovan again found the net for Kilmacs to leave the half time score 2 - 3 to 0 - 6. In the second half against the breeze Gabriels continued the pressure but Ger got inside the defence to notch another Kilmac goal. Gabriels never gave up but Kilmacs held out for 3 - 5 to 0 - 10 victory. They now face Bandon who will be going for the championship/league double in the final.
The U13 footballers played Pedlars Cross in the league final on Sunday morning in Rossmore. There was a very strong wind in Kilmacs favour for the first half. The young Kilmacs were playing well but while they had a slight advantage at half time on the score of 0-5 to 0-2 it didn’t look nearly enough especially as Pedlars had created chances of their own. The Kilmacs scored a goal at the start of the second half but as this was cancelled out by Pedlars with a goal of their own immediately it looked as if the struggle would be too much. With a few positional switches, amazingly the Kilmacs settled to the task and playing with good controlled use of possession, went on to play better against the wind. With every one playing their part they were able to show their ability and while the margin was tight in the end they were deserving of their victory on the score of 1-8 to 1-7. This was a welcome return for a group who have persevered even when results haven’t always gone their way and with fine individual performances it was the team effort that fashioned the win. Well done to the mentors Bart Kerrisk, Michael Gore and Sean Tobin for the work put in over the year. John Patrick Sheehan made a number of key saves especially during the first half and was very dependable throughout. Tiernan Kerrisk was outstanding in defence especially in the second half when he took over the centre back role. Ellis Wilson showed all his football awareness both defensively and in attack. Sean French won a huge amount of possession and was unbeatable all through. Ross Cantwell had one of his best ever days showing all his natural ability to win possession and use it positively. Jamie O Donoughue was strong all through and always had the advantage on his opposite number. Darren Whooley though upagainst a much bigger opponent didn't let it bother him and won a huge amount of possession and was always at the heart of things. Dan Lynch had an outstanding game, winning abundant possession, moving and linking effectively and able to finish with fine scores for a man of the match performance. Damian Gore as always was at the heart of the attack, working tirelessly, linking with others and finishing deadly. Myles Tobin won a lot of possession and linked well with the rest of the attack for his best game of the season. Ciaran French worked hard in attack in the first half but it was when he reverted to wing back that he really came into his own with his ability to read the game, win possession and use it. Caelan O'Mahony worked hard in attack even if it didn't always work out and the delivery didn't benefit his game. Ian Jennings put in a huge effort all over the place and showed great promise throughout. Adrian Gore and Karl Ronan came on and played their part. On Sunday afternoon it was off to Skibbereen to play the minor hurling league final against the home team. This was a game that was played in very difficult conditions. The Kilmacs had the advantage of the strong wind and were making the early running. The loss of Declan O’Sullivan with a painful finger injury midway through the half disrupted the flow and a soft goal was conceded soon after to level the game. The Kilmacs responded with a goal of their own but the lead at half time of 1-6 to 1-2 did not look enough in the conditions. Again the team individually and collectively responded and with some tremendous displays all over the pitch, were able to respond to the challenge and even extend the advantage. Some late Skibbereen scores made for a nervous final few minutes but the team was not giving in and were worthy winners on the score 1- 9 to 2 – 4. This was a tremendous show of spirit and heart by this group and showed their enthusiasm for the game. When these teams met in the first round of the league Kilmacabea had to borrow two players from their opponents to play the game. Team Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Martin Collins, Liam Thompson, Euan Tobin, Niall Hayes, Finnán Tobin, Liam Cahalane, Kevin Whooley, Eamon O’Sullivan(0-5), Declan O’Sullivan(0-1), Kevin Hayes, Richie O’Sullivan(1-3), Shane McDermott, Liam O’Driscoll, Kevin O’Donovan, Denny Hayes, Aidan Williamson.
The week shows the benefits of sport and the way it can lift people’s spirits and bring pleasure and enjoyment.
Martina French, Knockanenacrohy won the first prize in this month's club draw. Karl McCarthy, Glandore won the second prize and third went Jonathan Hill, Clonkeen House. Consolation prizes were won by Norma Whelton, Clounties; Michael Glavin, Dromillihy; Christy and Anne McCarthy, Maulmoreen and Adrian O Driscoll, Kilmacsimon. That completes the current series of draws. Tickets are now on sale for the coming twelve months. The prize fund will again be €1,000 per month and tickets €10 per month

The club expresses sympathy to his parents Sheila and John, his brothers and sisters and all his family.

County Champions
Sunday 25th October 2011, was another historic day in the clubs history when Kilmacabea played Churchtown in the County final of the Rebel Og Minor Hurling championship in Macroom. On a fine day and the ground in good condition there was a sense of déjà vu as Churchtown’s colors were also green and gold and their sponsor was also an O’Brien. For those that came late there was some confusion as to which was their side to support. Churchtown started powerfully and showing good touches and with a strong wind at their backs, looked to have all the options and before the Kilmacs got their bearings, they were a goal and a point down and it looked as if the day was over before it had begun. Slowly they got to grips and while Churchtown were still creating chances the Kilmacs were beginning to raise their game. It looked as if the breakthrough came in the 7th minute when Liam O’Driscoll goaled but unfortunately it was disallowed for a square infringement. The Kilmac defence with some superb performances were now more settled and this provided the platform to set up their own attacks and while the first point didn’t come until the 10th minute the game was now end to end. When Richie O’Sullivan goaled in the 17th minute the Kilmacs now had a 1point lead and the Kilmacs were showing well and went in ahead at half time on the score Kilmacabea 1-6 Churchtown 1-4. As happens the wind was gone for the second half but some positional switches seemed to have an effect for the Kilmacs, as a 5point gap was opened by the 8th minute when Kevin Hayes goaled. Churchtown were not going to give in easily and it was now their turn. By the 14th minute the game was again level and Churchtown were playing with more fluency and potency and looked capable of taking control. Some more switches from the Kilmacs tipped the balance back and with 3 crucial points managed to edge ahead again by the 22nd minute with both sides giving it everything. The crucial score came in the 23rd minute when Richie O’Sullivan took on the defence to goal. This was the spark and with effective substitutions the game was now in the control of the Kilmacs and showing great fitness they finished powerfully. The final score of 3-14 to 2-7 was a little flattering compared to the closeness that had gone before, in a game that was hugely entertaining, with good skill and played in a fair manner. Referee Eamon Sheehy and his officials did a good job all through. The cup was presented to captain Finnán Tobin by Denis Keohane, Oifigeach Oiliúna, Cork County Board who has been of assistance in the development of hurling in the club. Well done to the mentors Derry O’Callaghan, TJ Collins, Tom Hayes and Michael Tobin who have worked with them all year and also to the mentors on the football side who have cooperated. This is the clubs first county hurling title and is a welcome return for the efforts of a small band such as John Collins, John Walsh, John Burke who have worked with these players down thro the years, a lot of the time, against the odds trying to keep players interested and involved. At the start of the year when only ten players turned up for the first few games this result was a long way away but the players responded to the call and it was their attitude that earned this result. It has been shown in all the games, the spirit that was within the group and in how they played for the team and for each other. The first prize in this month's club draw was won by John Patrick and Cillian Sheahan, Leap. The second prize went to Justine Fay, Glandore and third to Albert Wilson, Killinga. Consolation prizes were won by Michael and Alyson Tobin, Kilfinnin; the Limerick Family, Shreelane; Tom Murphy, Reavouler and Patricia Dineen, Brade.
The U16 footballers took on neighbors Carbery Rangers in the quarter final of the championship on Friday 9th September in Skibbereen. On a wet evening with a strong wing it was tough conditions for football. While the Kilmacs opened the scoring it was the Ross men who were making the early impression and they got a huge boost with a goal in the early minutes followed by some points. The middle of the first half was competitive with neither side having an advantage. Towards the end of the half the Kilmacs began to play with more direction and closed the gap with some fine points from Kevin Whooley to leave the score Kilmacabea 0-5 Carbery Rangers 1-3. With Richie O’Sullivan coming in at half time the attack was now sharper and the balance was tipped when Richie scored a goal after 8 minutes and a slight gap was opened. The game continued to be competitive to the end and while the Kilmacs were ahead they were pushed all the way and had to work very hard for the result. The final score of 1-12 to 1-4 would have been a lot tighter if the Ross lads had availed of the opportunities created. This was a good test of the resolve of the team and should stand to them.
