Kilmacabea GAA Notes 28/1/11

The first prize winner in the monthly club draw in January was Ted O Donovan, Kilmacabea. The second went to Eileen Tobin, Kilfinnin and third Ger O Sullivan, Dromillihy. Consolation prizes were won by Julie O Mahony, Cooladreen; Tadhg and Sinead McCarthy, Reavouler; Mary O Brien, Gortnadihy and Margaret Murphy, Reavouler.
The following are the managers for the underage teams for 2012.
Minor football, (B Grade, 15 a side) - William Williamson, Minor Hurling (C Grade 12 a side) - Derry O’Callaghan,
U16 football (A Grade 15 a  side) – Kevin O’Driscoll, U16 Hurling – Michael Tobin,
U14 Football (B Grade 15 a side) - Bart Kerrisk, U14 Hurling - Frank Wilson,
U13 Football (C Grade, 12 a side) – Bart Kerrisk,
U 12 Football - David Connolly, U 12 Hurling – John Collins,
U10 Football – Timmie O’Mahony, U10 Hurling – John Collins.
The hurling grades haven't been finalised
There will be a presentation night for the successful underage teams on Saturday 4th February in the clubhouse at 7.45pm. Teams to be presented include the minor hurlers, the U16 hurlers and footballers and the U13 footballers. The club presentations will also be made.
Registration night to be held on Friday 10th February 8 to 9pm in the clubhouse. Club gear will also be available.

Tim John O'Donoghue
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of "Tim John" O'Donoghue, Aughatubber, Glandore.
Tim John passed away on 5th January 2012,aged 73, and was buried in Glandore Old Graveyard, Aughatubber overlooking his home.
His loss to those involved with Kilmacabea GAA Club is hard to express. Tim John had great interest in all things local and contributed to and supported anything that was happening. His every day had some link to football. There was hardly a game at any age group, no matter where it was, that he didn't attend. His daughter in law Geraldine and his grandnephews travelled with him throughout the county. It will be strange not to see him there pacing up and down, sometimes fearing the worst, yet forever supportive of his team. His encouragement and enthusiasm will be badly missed. Even though he was on the side line, he sometimes covered more ground than the hardest working player. There are numerous photos after games and Tim John is pictured always first to offer congratulations and praise to one and all. Even in the article that preceded this he can be seen  for photos of a game 9/10/11. He was the unofficial club mascot. As was repeated over recent  days, there has probably never been a more dedicated club supporter.
Tim John also played his part on the field and he appears in the rare photos of teams from those days in the late fifties and sixties. While there wasn't great success in the record books, there was always an element of disappointment in relation to the team of 1959 which lost out on a technicality.
Tim John also played his part as a rower with Kilmacabea Rowing Club and had the trophies to show for it. He had a longtime involvement in the local regatta both in the preparation and as a participant in rowing, duck chase and greasy pole. He supplied the ducks for the duck chase and there are  numerous tales associated with various ducks over the years.
Tim John was a long time member of the Irish Coastguard Service and was always available to do what was needed.
Tim John was one of those characters, that are becoming rarer, who were once at the heart of all rural communities. He had a great ability to speak with people young and old and it was always in a positive way.
There are people throughout West Cork would know Tim John immediately once described but there are people even within his own parish who may not know his surname. He was one of those who are instantly known by their christian name alone. His legacy and legend will live long in the memories of those who knew him.
While Tim John didn't marry he was better than any father could be to his nephew Mike Gore and his nieces Anne (O'Sullivan) and Josie. He had a huge part to play in their lives and in the lives of his grand nieces and grand nephews when they came along. He took great delight in their successes at various levels in recent years. He felt huge pride especially with his grand nephew Richie O'Sullivan who has had great success with Cork underage football teams and with Damien Gore, who lived beside him, when he played on the Cork Primary Schools' team at half time in the Cork v Kerry Munster final in 2011.
He leaves behind a huge gap for everyone. He will be remembered by his family, neighbours and friends with great affection.

Notes 13/12/12

The Annual General Meeting  of the club was held on  Friday 9th December in the Club House. A decent attendance was given a detailed review of the years activities on and off the field. Successes to record include clubs first County Minor hurling championship as well as Rebel Og West League and championship, U16hurling championship, U16 football league and U13 football league. The main areas of discussion were the feasibility and capacity to field a second football team and the possibility of fielding an U21 hurling team. Pat Burke stepped down as chairman and is replaced by William Williamson. Pat had been at the helm of the club in undertaking the development of recent years and his vision and drive were core to the success of that work which mean the club now having facilities second to none. It is hoped his skills can be harnessed in new ways. The club officers for 2012 are as follows President - Tim O’Leary,  Vice President - Fr. Pat O’Sullivan, Chairman - William Williamson, Vice Chair - John Collins, Secretary - Donal O’Donovan, Asst Secretary - Brian O’Donovan, Under Age Sec. -  Derry O’Callaghan, Registrar -  John  Collins, Treasurer - Pat O’Callaghan, Asst Treasurer - Kay Ronan, PRO -  Michael Tobin, Insurance Off  - Dan Hourihane, Child Liaison Officer -  Breda O’Donovan, South West Board Reps Mick O’Donovan, Brian O’Donovan, John O’Sullivan, Donal O’Donovan, Co Board Rep Noel Crowley, Peadar O’Laoire. Membership €50, Student/Juvenile €20.
Club members are urged to make their views known on their choice of Club Player of the Year, Young Player(U16) and Club Person of the Year to Donal O’Donovan 086 2644445 ASAP. It has been decided to name the club player of the year trophy in memory of Jonathan O’Regan.

The Annual General Meeting is fixed for this Friday 9th December, 2011 at 8.00pm in the Clubhouse. All are encouraged to attend so that the administration of the club is strong. This meeting is for both the adult and the underage clubs

Fixture U16 hurling league final vs. Mizen Og in Goleen on Sunday 4th December at 11am. Match cancelled.

The U16 footballers played Clanna Gael in the final of the league on Sunday 27th November in the Marsh Skibbereen. After the very heavy rain in the days leading up to it the pitch was in as good a shape as could be expected with a little water on the surface. Playing with the benefit of the strong wind the Kilmacs settled quickly. With Gavin Daly repeating his effort of the previous week with an early goal the Kilmacs were on top. With goals also from Richie O’Sullivan and Euan Tobin they were in a strong position at half time ahead 3- 8 to 0 – 2. Clanna Gael had a bigger input in the second half as would be expected and while they created opportunities of their own the gap was too big to close. A few knocks also disrupted the flow of the game but the Kilmacs had enough in reserve and won the game 3 – 9 to 1 – 5.The trophy was accepted by Richie O’Sullivan, captain. Well done to all the players for their efforts over a long season and their mentors Kevin O’Driscoll, William Williamson , Martin O’Sullivan and Tom Hayes.

Kate O’Donovan(Clounkeen) represented the club in the Scor Na Og competition and was successful going forward to the next stage. Aishling O’Callaghan(Maultrahane), Eoin O’Sullivan(Mealisheen) and Darren Whooley(Droum) came 3rd in the Quiz. Well done to all.

The U16 footballers played Kilmeen in the semi final of the league in Rossmore on Sunday morning the 20th November. With the opposition having won the championship it was expected to be a tough test. The conditions were difficult after the heavy rain in the days preceding. The Kilmacs got off to an ideal start when Gavin Daly was able to finish to the net in the first minute. Kilmeen responded but the Kilmac team was playing with a good balance and settled into the game and were worth the half time lead of 1 –7 to 0-2. Kilmeen did start the second half with a goal but the Kilmacs closed the game out and were always in control to finish on the score 2-15 to 2-3. This was a good team performance and was a welcome return and was hugely important after events in recent times. 

Several of the players were off to the Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork after that to receive medals from Conor Counihan, Cork Senior football manager for being part of successful Cork County underage football teams in 2011. Niall Hayes and Richie O’Sullivan were part of the U16 team. Martin Collins, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Euan Tobin and Kevin Whooley were part of the U15 team.
