Notes 23/4/12

On Thursday night 19/4/12 the minor hurlers travelled to play Gabriel’s in Ballydehob. With limited numbers available and some of those having already had tough school games during the day it was a big ask. Never the less those present put in a good effort and the game was competitive before losing on the score 2-14 to 3-5. 

On Sunday morning the U12 footballers were away to Clanna Gael and for the second week running were on the right side of a one point winning margin 5-2 to 2-10.

The important match this week is the 1^st round of the junior A football championship when Kilmacabea take on Barryroe in Clonakilty on Saturday, 28^th April at 4.30pm.Support is important.

An interesting article in the Irish Examiner on Saturday 21^st April, on the development of the GAA in Spain including the involvement of underage players. Featured in the article was Colm O’Donovan, Sunnyhill, Leap who is involved with Valencia. Colm was a fine player with Kilmacabea underage, 10-15 years ago. It is good to see the games being promoted to new audiences. It is a reflection of the times with people scattered throughout the world in the search of employment especially in the current economic climate, the role the GAA plays in people lives and the importance in the social network.

Kilmacabea Notes 16/4/12

Kilmacabea were hosts to St Oliver Plunketts in Leap last Sunday afternoon 15/4/12 in the junior A football league. Another entertaining game was served up in near perfect conditions for football. The home side appeared to have the edge for much of the game but two late goals for Plunketts brought them right back into it. Kilmacabea were lucky to survive on a final score of 3 - 11 to 3 - 10. The previous Thursday the second junior team were away to Clonakilty in the junior B football league. Clon took complete control in the second quarter. The score at half time was 4 - 5 to 0 - 2. Kilmac to their great credit made a game of it in the second half loosing at the finish on a score of 4 - 11 to 3 - 9.

On Thursday night the U14hurlers put in the performance of the week when they played St James in the league. Going in to the game with no great expectations they worked hard and were rewarded with a welcome if unexpected victory on the score 5-4 to 0-8.

On Friday night the minor hurlers had a convincing win over Goleen in the league.

On Saturday morning the U12 footballers had their first game of the season against St Colum’s and after an even game came out on the right side of a 1point win. Kilmacabea 4 - 3 St Colums 3 - 5

On Monday night Carbery Rangers were the visitors in the U16 hurling league and after a match with little between the sides the Kilmac’s did enough to edge ahead towards the end of the game.

Kilmacabea Notes 10/4/12

  Garnish made the long trip to Leap last Saturday evening to play Kilmacabea in the junior A football league. A very entertaining and competitive sporting game produced no less than seven goals. The final score was Kilmacabea 3 - 12, Garnish 4 - 5. The next round is against St Oliver Plunketts in Leap this Sunday afternoon at 2.30pm. Adults results are available on www.carberygaa.ie

The U14 and Minor hurlers were in action during the week and while results didn’t go their way it is early days and there are plenty of encouraging signs.

                 The first prize in the April club draw was won by Norma Whelton, Clounties; second went to John Cahalane, Maulmoreen and third Annie and Imelda O Donovan, Ballinlough. Consolation prizes were won by Ruarai Hourihane, Keamore; Albert Wilson, Killinga; Eoin and Shane O Sullivan, Mealisheen and John Patrick and Cillian Sheahan, Killinga.

Notes 31/3/12

 In last Sunday's football league game away against Bandon, the juniors, playing against the breeze, found themselves facing a big lead by half time. They had just two points to show against 1 - 9 for the home side. With the breeze they made a game of it in the second half, losing by a single point at the finish for the second week in a succession. The score was 1 - 13 to 1 - 12.  

The U16 footballers also played Bandon in a challenge match on Sunday morning in what was a good run out with the team playing well both individually and collectively. 

With the change to Summer time and the lengthening evenings games will now be coming thick and fast with a busy programme to be maintained. Underage the emphasis will now switch to hurling for the month of April.

Notes 22/3/12

 On Sunday 18th March Tadgh MacCarthaigh were the visitors to Leap and took the spoils on the score 1- 10 to 2-6 in the Junior A league.

On Monday 19^th Ballinascarthy with a much depleted side were the visitors in the minor football league for a game which was very one sided through no fault of those playing.

Kilmacabea Notes 17/3/12

Missing at least six first choice players through injury and other commitments Kilmacabea Juniors travelled to Ballydehob last Saturday evening for their opening game of the new season. A rather experimental combination took the field under lights more in hope than confidence. However the home side Gabriel Rangers were probably similarly depleted. At the end of a lively first half Kilmacs were just a point up at 0 – 7 to 1 – 3. On the resumption a penalty was expertly tucked away by Ger O Donovan. He added another goal from play at the three quarter stage. These scores proved to be the difference at the end. Kilmacs bagged the two league points on a score of 2 – 10 to 1 – 7. Scorers Ger O Donovan 2 – 4 (1 – 3 frees) Joe Collins 0 – 5 (0 – 3 frees) John O Sullivan 0 – 1 (free) .

In the U 16 football league St Colum’s with limited numbers were the visitors to Leap on Sunday evening 11^th March. The game was competitive but the home team had a clear advantage in most positions and were able to fashion a comfortable win. 

March Monthly Draw winners are as follows 1st Mary French,  Killinga, 2nd  Ml  & Ann McCarthy, Reavouler, 3rd Anna Garvey, Killinga, Other winners - Dan Burke, Kilbrittain; Eoin O Donovan, Milleenanimrish; Timmy O Sullivan, Gurtyowen and Kathleen Hayes, c/o Ann Burke, Maulatrahane.

The club are hosting the West Cork U21A and B football semi-finals as a double header on Saturday evening 17^th March starting at 2.30pm so all available help will be needed for stewarding.

Kilmacabea Notes 10/3/12

The minor footballers travelled to Newcestown on Sunday morning 4^th March to play the home team in the league. With a few players unavailable the team was grateful to those who made the effort and they didn’t let the side down. With each and everyone playing their part it was a good performance with a lot of positives. While the scoreline didn´t go in their favour the gap was made look worse by a soft penalty in the last minute. If the commitment of all the players is given the team shows that they will be well able to compete. 

The final score was Kilmacabea 0-7 Newcestown 1-10

The U14 footballers began their campaign away to Kilbrittain on Sunday morning also. The team competed well in the first half but the greater strength of the opposition in key positions tipped the balance in their favour as the game went on. This team is competing at 15 a side and with limited numbers is very dependent on some very young players in order not to forfeit. With a few games they should find their balance. Final score Kilmacabea 1 - 2 Kilbrittain 6 - 6

A number of locals were successful recently in the Carbery final of the Scor na bPaistí competition held in Ballydehob on Friday 27th January. Congratulations to Grace O’Sullivan who won first prize in Solo Singing, the first time the club has won this. Also well done to Kate O’Donovan who got second in the Recitation and the Music Group – Davina Connolly, Saoirse Connolly, Chantelle French, Katelyn French, and Aoife McNamara who also won second prize. The Quiz team of Gareth Whooley, Mary Clare Williamson and Ellis Wilson also did very well.




The U21 footballers were in championship action in Skibbereen on Saturday 25th when they played Tadgh MacCarthaigh. The team put in a decent first half effort and the sides went in behind by one point at half time. Unfortunately Caheragh completely dominated the third quarter and when they goaled on the 20th minute the game looked well gone. The Kilmac lads roused themselves and made a good effort to the end but weren’t able to close the gap and the final score was Kilmacabea 1-10 Tadgh MacCarthaigh 1-14. With a number of players not available the selectors had put in a good effort to assemble a group and with a young side it was good to see some players that hadn’t played much football in recent years doing their part.


The U16 footballers began their league campaign on Sunday 26th when they travelled to play Ilen Rovers in Rath. This was a very good game especially with tough underfoot conditions between two evenly matched sides and the Kilmacs were delighted to be on the right side of a 1-6 to 1-4 scoreline.
