Notes 31/7/12

On Tuesday 24^th July the minor footballers played Naomh Aban in the championship in Ballineen.  With the team as a unit never performing to their potential they were beaten on the night on the score of 0-11 to 0-6. The U16 hurlers won their game in the league vs. St Colms in Kealkil on Thursday 26^th July.

Preparations are ongoing for the community festival which will run from 1^st - 6^th August. It is important to support events as efforts have been made to have something for everyone. 

The semi finals of the Fr Crowley cup involving all the National school pupils (3^rd -6^th classes) will be played on Friday 3^rd August at 6pm followed by the opening by Sean Kelly, MEP at 8pm. The play off finals will be played on Saturday evening at 6pm. Next week the Cul Camp runs from Tuesday 7^th to Friday 10^th August inclusive from 10 to 2pm each day. Roll call on the first day Tuesday is at 9.30am.

Congratulations to a number of club members for their achievements last weekend.

Shane O’Neill won a bronze medal in the All Ireland U17 javelin in Tullamore.

Kieran O’Sullivan, Liam Thompson, Alex Nowotynski, Mikey O’Mahony, Dara Tobin, Adrian Gore, Joseph O’Callaghan, Euan Tobin and  Caelan O’Mahony were part of crews that won medals in the Cork County Coastal rowing championship in Haulbowline on Sunday 29^th July.

The first prize winner in the July club draw was Rory O Brien, Shreelane, second went to Margaret Burke, Maulatrahane and third the O Donovan Family, West Quay. Consolation prizes were won by Amy and Joanne Hamilton, Glandore; Jimmy Kenneally, Drinagh; Martin O Sullivan, Droum and Michael Tobin, Keamore.                                       

On Wednesday 18^th July the minor hurlers played St Colms in the championship in Skibbereen.  The team was slow to settle and the western men were much livelier playing with the wind and were in a strong position at half time ahead on the score 3-8 to 1-4. While the game may have appeared out of reach the team put in a great effort and worked very hard for the second half. While they dominated possession they were unable to convert this possession into scores and while the final score showed them losing 1-6 to 4-8 they had restored a lot of pride with their effort. 

On Friday evening the minor footballers played Clanna Gael in a competitive game that was a good preparation for the championship which will have been played by the time these notes are printed.

The U8 footballers took part in an excellently organised blitz in Dunmanway on Saturday 21^st July. The conditions were superb and this was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all involved and was a credit to the organisers.

News 17/7/12

On Tuesday 10^th July the U16 hurlers played Bantry in the championship  in Skibbereen.  The players put in a great effort and worked very hard. Unfortunately they were up against a team whose skill and touch was excellent. There was ability throughout the Bantry  team and as hard as the Kilmacs tried they were never going to be able to match this fine Bantry team, who would be far ahead of anything in West Cork at this level. While the margin was big it did not reflect the effort put in by the players some of who were helping out to ensure the numbers were there. On Thursday evening the minor footballers played a very under strength O’Donovan Rossa team in a game that never rose above 1^st gear.

There was good news for club members during the week. Pat Burke, Maultrahane and recent past chairman was the 1^st prize winner of the Cork GAA Club Draw for the month of June.

Martin Collins(Kilmacabea), Diarmaid O’Callaghan(Maultrahane) and Kevin Whooley(Shreelane) were part of the Cork U16football team that won the Munster championship. Cork beat Kerry South in the final in Limerick on Sunday. Martin had the added honour of captaining the team. Kevin O’Driscoll(Shreelane) is a mentor with the team.

Organisations and groups within the parish are encouraged to get their thinking caps on and prepare items for the Rag parade in Leap on Sunday 5^th August as part of the community festival.

Kilmacabea Gaa Notes 9/7/12

                      A number of games were played at various levels during the week but there wasn’t much joy in the results. On Thursday 5^th St Colms were the visitors to Leap and as has been the case a number of times during the year the home side lost out by the slimmest of margins on the score Kilmacabea 2- 11 St.Colms 1-15. On the same night the minor hurlers played Carbery Rangers in the league in Rosscarbery.  A good effort was put in but a stronger home team and with some good hurlers gave the Ross men a comprehensive victory. Liam Thompson suffered an arm injury which is hoped may not be as bad as feared. Tadgh McCarthaigh were the visitors to Leap on Saturday morning for the U12 football league but again the visitors were too strong for the home team. On Saturday evening the U14 footballers played Bantry in a challenge match but the Bantry team were a much stronger outfit and had a comprehensive win. A week to forget !. The show goes on.

                     The club has an ambitious programme drawn up for the Community Festival in Leap from the 1st to the 6th of August. It includes bowling, a mini regatta, darts, charades, children’s art, ceili dancing, Fr Crowley Cup (Parish schools football tournament), vintage car and tractor run, a car treasure hunt and musical entertainment. Among the highlights will be the official opening on Friday 3rd by Sean Kelly MEP former GAA President, a barbecue in John William Goulding Park on Saturday 4th and a rag and fancy dress parade in the village on Sunday 5th. All organisations in the parish are invited to enter a float in this parade. A detailed programme will be advertised closer to the date.

The junior A football team was in action on Saturday night when they took on neighbours Castlehaven in Skibbereen. On a very wet night it certainly didn’t feel like Summer. The team started positively and got a great boost when Sam O’Driscoll finished a good move to the net in the 6^th minute. Unfortunately this lead was not protected and the concession of goals in the 8^th and 14^th minute were extremely damaging to the positive start. Things got worse in the 19^th minute when the team was reduced to 14 with an unnecessary red card. The team battled on and went in at half time behind on the score of 2-4 to 1-4. The team tried hard for the second half but were always struggling to pick up loose ball and were putting themselves under pressure allowing Castlehaven to pick off scores to extend the lead. Things didn’t work out and the final score was Castlehaven 2-10, Kilmacabea 2- 5. A disappointing outcome for the effort put in by everyone.

There was a better outcome for the U14 footballers, that took on Kilbrittain in the championship in Ballinascarthy on Thursday night 21^st June. When these teams played in the league early in the season the Kilmacs lost heavily but they didn’t show any signs of those memories in how they went about this game. This was a team performance with each and everyone giving their all and there were outstanding performances throughout the field. The team played against the hill in the first half but using the ball effectively they were full value for their lead at half time. They started the second half in a similar fashion and continued to maintain their advantage. The greater strength of the Kilbrittain players began to show in the last 15minutes as the Kilmacs tired and Kilbrittain then got a grip. The Kilmacs held out and were deserving winners on the score of 2-12 to 2-5. This was a good example of what can be done with the application of the players, intelligent play combined with some luck and was a pleasant turn around.  Team John Patrick Sheehan, Odhran Kerrisk, Jamie O’Donoghue, Adrian Gore, Ross Cantwell, Sean French, Ciaran French, Tiernan Kerrisk(0-1), Darren Whooley, Ian Jennings(0-3), Caelan O’Mahony(0-1), Damien Gore(0-5), Oisin O’Driscoll(0-1), Dan Lynch(2-0), Myles Tobin(0-1), Karl Ronan, Conor Nash,  Ashley Deane, Jamie Ronan, Christy Wilson, Ellis Wilson.

The U10’s put in a good effort in their football game against a strong Kilmeen team on Wednesday 20^th June. 

The U12 hurlers had a good run out in their game against Skibbereen on Saturday 23^rd.

The club would like to express condolences to the family of William(Bill) Deane, Lahana, Drimoleague and Acres, Leap who was laid to rest during the week.

Notes 19/6/12

The U14 hurlers were in championship action in Rosscarbery on Saturday 16^th June. Their opponents were St. James a team they have met a few times in recent years. The team put in a good effort and were doing better than anticipated when unfortunately the concession of a goal right on half time was to prove their undoing. The half time score was Kilmacabea 0-5 St. James 1-6. Starting slowly for the second half meant that Ardfield were able to pick off scores to extend their lead and the effort was taking its toll. To their credit they never gave in and came strongly at the end but the gap was too much. It was a good effort that players could feel satisfied with. Team Odhran Kerrisk, Jamie O’Donoghue, Christy Wilson, Ross Cantwell, Caelan O’Mahony, Tiernan Kerrisk, Darren Whooley, Ian Jennings, Ashley Deane, Myles Tobin, Sean French, Ciaran French, Karl Ronan, Conor Nash, Oisin O’Driscoll, Jamie Ronan. This team was in action again the following morning when they travelled to play Ilen Rovers in the league in Rath. With some players missing and a lot of tired and bruised bodies it was a much weakened team that took to the field. Even though they were well beaten on the score line they again gave full value and tried their best. For some of the younger players they were taking on opponents almost twice their size.

There were some very enjoyable games played by the U8/6’s when Carbery Rangers were the visitors on Saturday morning. There mightn’t have been much order and some lapses in concentration but there was great enthusiasm both by the players and their parents.

A number of girls from the parish were part of the Rosscarbery Ladies U14 football team that won the County final on Saturday when they beat Dromtarriff. They include Ashling O’Callaghan, Julieanne Williamson, Amy O’Donovan, Rachel O’Driscoll, Michelle O’Driscoll, Shannon Ronan, Aoife Crowley, Louise O’Regan, Grace O’Sullivan, Kate Beamish.

The big match this week is the Junior A Football Championship vs. Castlehaven in Skibbereen on Saturday 23^rd June at 6.15pm. Support would be most welcome.

Notes 12/6/12

Things are relatively quiet at the moment due to the impact of exams. Main activity is for younger teams. 

The pitch was recently sanded and spiked and with the reduced activity and recent weather it should get a good chance for recovery.

June winners in the club draw are as follows 1^st Eoghan O’Donovan, Ballyvoreen, Glandore, 2^nd John Sweetnam, Killinga, Leap, 3^rd Gretta Finn, Church Cross, Skibbereen. Consolation prize winners were -  Pat and Clare O’Mahony, Mealisheen, Leap, John Jennings, Gortroe, Peter O’Callaghan, Dungannon, Deniese & Diarmaid French Knockaneacrohy, Leap.

The club are again running a Cul Camp which this year is sponsored by Kelloggs. The camp is for boys and girls aged 6-13 and will be held in Leap on the 7^th – 10^th August. It would be important to get bookings completed early to finalise numbers for the ordering of kit. Bookings to John Collins 086 8936314 who is club coordinator.
