Notes 4/7/13

St Patrick s U14 hurling team replayed the championship semi-final against Clonakilty on Wednesday July 3rd. This turned into a thriller between two evenly matched teams. Some key players from both sides were missing from the drawn match on Saturday due to holidays. Clonakilty again opened the scoring and though St Pats levelled soon after, Clonakilty goaled to give them the advantage. St Pats were working hard and created and scored some fine points to level the game after the first quarter. St Pats were in contention but Clonakilty were using possession well and  with the boost of a goal just before half time were in a very strong position,  going in at half time seven points ahead on the score St Pats 0-4 Clonakilty 2-5. With Clonakilty getting the first score of the second half it could have been easy for heads to drop but it was now the true spirit of the St Pats team shone through. The team working for each other began to dominate in the key positions. They now converted this possession into scores and limited Clonakilty’s opportunities.  With ten minutes to go the game was now level with both sides giving everything.  Clonakilty came back and went two points ahead.  In great excitement St Pats now got the crucial breakthrough with a goal with 3 minutes left to give them a narrow lead. The game was end to end with both sides creating chances.  With the St Pats defence clearing their lines they added another point to give a dangerous lead but the result was sealed with a goal in injury time.  It was hard on any team to lose in a game that was even throughout and played in the right attitude and a credit to both sides. The greater physical presence of St Pats gave them the strength to last the game. The final score was St Patricks 4-7 Clonakilty 2-8
Kilmacabea team members were Jamie O’Donoghue who was outstanding all through, Ashley Deane, Conor Nash and Myles Tobin.

The final vs. Carbery Rangers is fixed for Saturday July 6th in Enniskeane at 19.30.

The U14 hurlers of St Patricks were in championship action on Saturday evening June 29th when they took on Clonakilty in the semi-final in Rossmore. When these teams met in the league Clonakilty were a far superior group and won handsomely. St Patricks have settled along the way and are now playing with a lot more cohesion and direction. Clonakilty opened the scoring but St Patricks got an early boost when Ellis Wilson goaled. Clonakilty responded with a goal of their own soon after and added a second with 10minutes left in the half but they were being made to work very hard and there was little in the game at half time with the score St. Patricks 1-5 Clonakilty 2-4. The second half continued in a similar manner. The game was evenly balanced and while Clonakilty had a little more skill the work rate and application of all the St. Patricks players meant the game was wide open. In fact a shock looked on with St Patricks two points ahead with two minutes to go. The effort was showing and Clonakilty were able to level the match. Kilmacabea team members were Jamie O’Donoghue, Ellis Wilson, Ashley Deane and  Myles Tobin.
This is being replayed on this Wednesday July 3rd at 19.30 in Rossmore.

Notes 25/6/13

The junior footballers were back in action on Saturday evening when they took on St James in section 1 of the league in leap. Both sides lined out without a lot of regulars and the quality of the game suffered. Both sides tried their best, but a disappointing hours football ensued with the Kilmac lads running out winners on a score-line of Kilmacabea 1-15 St James 0-8. Improvement will be needed before the next round of the championship, which is scheduled for the weekend of the 20th/21st of July.

Minor footballers after non exam league win vs Eire Og Monday 14th June 2013

Tuesday, June 18, 2013

Notes 18/6/13

The minor footballers were on the road again on Thursday evening, 13th June, as they travelled to Rusheen in mid cork to take on the home side Aghinagh in the Non Exam League semi final. The journey was not wasted as the team performed excellently and ran out comfortable winners on a score line of Kilmacabea 2-17  Aghinagh 0-7. This meant that all roads led to Kilmichael to take on Eire Og in the Non Exam League Final on Monday evening, 17th June. This turned out to be cracking game of football were no quarter was asked or given for the full hour. Two early goals propelled the team into a six points lead. Credit to the mid cork outfit as their midfield trio started to dominate and the Kilmacs held a 2-5 to 1-6 point lead at the interval. On resumption the Eire Og team upped the ante and pulled level with just over ten minutes to go and looked the likelier team to wrestle the trophy off the Kilmacs. But resilience and hard work are the buzz words in the team and they managed three late scores to run out one point winners on the night by 2-10 to 1-12 winners. The team rode their luck but every one put in a mighty effort and had earned the victory. Captain Richie O Sullivan accepted the trophy from the Kilmichael under age secretary Liam MacCoitir to jubilant cries for the Kilmac support.

The club would like to wish Odhran Connolly a speedy recovery with his unfortunate injury. It came at a time that upset the balance and fluency of the team.
Team Matthew O'Neill, Odhran Connolly, Neil Hayes, Euan Tobin, Shane McDermott, Gavin Daly, Martin Collins, Padraig Cronin, Diarmaid O'Callaghan, Seamus Murphy, Kevin Whooley, Richie O'Sullivan, James O'Discoll, Kevin ODonovan, Issac O'Shea, Tiernan Kerrisk, Caelan O'Mahony, Darren Whooley, Ciaran French.

The junior B footballers kept up their impressive recent form with a 4-10 to 2-5 victory over St James in Ardfield last Friday evening. That win strengthens this teams place in the league standings and might prove to be springboard for players to the first junior team.

A large gang of u8’s and u10’s travelled to Bandon last Saturday morning. Enjoyment and teamwork are the two buzz words for this group as they take the first steps hopefully into the club structures as players with games against Barryroe , Bandon and Ballinascarthy. It was an enjoyable morning for all involved and credit has to go to all involved in this age group.

Monday night the 17th June was a historic night for the St Patricks hurling club as the U14’s took on Barryroe in the clubs first championship outing in Rosscarbery. This group were competitive in their league games but results hadn’t been going their way as the more learned hurlers had that little too much craft for them. In this game the team was able to call on a full panel and it had the desired effect. While some of the players didn’t have much game time coming into this match, their natural skill and competitive spirit made up for that. Settling in to the game the team was able to put themselves in a good position and were ahead by 7 points at half time. While this was a good position the team had done well in the first half of games previously only for things to come unstuck in the second half so it was with a level of caution going into the second half. This time the team kept the momentum going and were delighted to record the victory on the score of St Patricks 4- 15 Barryroe 2-7. No better time to record the clubs first victory. Kilmacabea team members were Jamie O’Donoghue, Ellis Wilson, Ian Jennings, Myles Tobin and Ashley Deane.

Notes 13/6/13
This past weekend turned out to be a very on one on the playing field as all three teams that represented the club all enjoyed victories. Firstly the minor footballers took on Canovee in the Minor Non Exam League in leap on Friday evening. With wins over Kinsale, Bandon and Glenville all ready in the bag, this was always going to be a keenly contested affair, as a victory for the Kilmacs would guarantee them a semi final place. Having already beaten the Kilmacs at u21 level earlier in the season, Canovee knew that they would face an extremely motivated Kilmac outfit. This proved to be the case, as a fluid Kilmac outfit tore into the visitors from Muskerry and had established a comfortable 3-9 to 0-7 lead at the interval, Kevin Whooley, Richie O Sullivan and Shane McDermott getting the goals. A change of pace in the second half saw the visitors work tirelessly to try and regain a foothold, but with a full back as sturdy as Martin Collins and a half back line of Seamus Murphy, Gavin Daly and Shane McDermott never wilting the Kilmacs ran out comfortable winners on a score-line of Kilmacabea 4-16 Canovee 0-14. This result now means that they have qualified for the semi finals of this competition.

The junior second team made the trip to Bandon on Friday evening last and put in a magnificent display of commitment and dogged determination to turn over the home side on a score line of Kilmacabea 1-11 Bandon 0-4. This was a great victory for this group of players, many of who have the potential to be involved in the first team later in the summer. The efforts of Brian Hayes, Peadar O Leary and the imperious Adrian O Driscoll at centre back laid the foundations for this great win and with Noel O Donoghue, Colin McCarthy, Richard Jennings and Barry Glavin also putting in impressive display’s, this team will hope to carry this form forward for the rest of the season.

The junior A footballers were the last team in action at the weekend, when they welcomed Clann na Gael to John William Goulding Park on Sunday morning in Section One of the football league. On a well presented sod and under a sweltering sun, both sides put in a fine hour of football with a more determined Kilmac outfit taking the spoils on a score-line of Kilmacabea 1-12 Clann na Gael 0-6. This game never reached the heights of the drama witnessed when the two sides met in the u21 championship earlier in the year, as the Kilmacs dominated much of the possession and possessed much more in the attack sector of the field. A Sam O Driscoll goal mid way through the first half gave the home side a healthy lead which they never yielded.

Monthly Draw winners for June: 1st Joe Cowhig, C/O Cowhigs Costcutter , 2nd Gerard Grace, Glandore, 3rd John Jagoe, Drinagh, 4th Vergie O Callaghan, Maultrahane, 5th Michael and Ann McCarthy, Reavouler, 6th Martina and Marian O Neill C/O Skibbereen Hospital, 7th Eileen Connolly, Corran

Notes 6/6/13
The junior A footballers were in action again in section one of the league last saturday evening when they travelled to durrus to take on the home side Muintir Bhaire. With a number of players  unavailable this was a good chance for some of the fringe squad members to stake their claim for a starting place in the team for the next round of the championship. On a poor playing surface the Kilmacs wasted no time displaying their superiority over the hosts with two first half goals gave the team a half- time lead of 2-7 to 1-6. Credit to the home side , who over the past few years have been struggling due to emigration, put in a battling second half display and can be happy with their hour’s work. For the Kilmacs, a third goal midway through the second half killed the contest and they ran out comfortable winners on a score line of Kilmacabea 3-14  Muintir Bhaire 1-13.

The club would like to congratulate a number of it’s members and associate members for their performances on the field over the past month. Damien Gore,  Jamie O Donoghue, Ellis Wilson and Myles Tobin who were  part of the Mount Saint Michael Secondary School County U14 winning football team recently.
Damien is also a member of the Carbery U14 development squad and the club wish him well as he continues to impress on the playing fields. A mention must also go to the Mt Saint Michael Senior Footballers, who captured the Cork Colleges ‘B’ Football title recently and also received the Buckley Financial Team of the Month for May. This side was captained by Kilmacabea’s  very own Liam Thompson and also in the squad were Martin Collins, Niall Hayes, Matthew O Neill and Richie O Sullivan.

The club would also like to congratulate the Maultrahane NS Girls football team, who recently won their section of the West Cork Sciath na Scoil football tournament. This achievement means that they have now won their section for an astonishing 11th year in a row, which is a tremendous accolade in any grade of gaelic football!!. Well done also to Kate O Donovan, Maultrahane who will have the honour of representing Cork in the Primary Schools game at half time in Munster Senior Football Final in Killarney in July. Everyone in the club wishes you all the best for this fantastic achievement.

Fixtures for the coming week: Minor Football Non Exam league vs Glenville on Tuesday 4th June at 7:30pm in Glenville, Minor Football Non Exam league vs Canovee on Friday 7th June at 7:30pm in Leap, Minor Football Non Exam league vs Eire Og on Monday 10th June at 7:30pm in Ovens, Junior B Football League vs Bandon on Friday 7th June at 7:30pm.

Notes 30/5/13
The minor footballers got the playing action underway this week when they made the journey to Kinsale to take on the home side in the first game of the Minor Non Examination Football League. This competition is played on a league basis and Kilmacabea are in a group consisting of Bandon, Eire Og, Glenville, Canovee and Kinsale played on a 12-a-side basis. Unfortunately  for all this game turned out to be a procession, where a better balanced and more efficient Kilmac outfit providing way too strong for the home side and running out comfortable winners on a score-line of Kinsale 0-5 Kilmacabea 4-10. It was a useful exercise in the respect that it gave management a chance to look at fringe players and a brace of goals, one from a penalty from impressive wing forward Podge Cronin will give them some food for thought going into the remaining fixtures in this competition. This team are due to play Bandon in Leap on this Tuesday evening in the same competition.
Action continued on Saturday evening last, when all roads led to Enniskeane for the eagerly awaited County U21 B Football Championship Quarter Final against Muskerry champions Canovee. After capturing the South West title against a much fancied Clann Na Gael outfit, the Kilmacs felt that they could rattle the county competition and pushed this well tuned Canovee side very close. After an outstanding hour’s football, were the efforts of Martin Collins, Diarmuid O Callaghan and John O Sullivan keeping the Kilmacs in the hunt right until the final whistle, it was heartbreaking to see this young team come within one point of a huge upset but alas Lazarus was not to been seen this time and they went down on a score-line of Kilmacabea 0-11 Canovee 1-9. It was an outstanding achievement to capture the South West championship which such a young side and all credit has to go to the management team of Adrian and Brendan O Driscoll, Timothy O Mahony and Johnny O Sullivan for putting in countless hours on the training field early in the year that ultimately lead to that championship success. If this team can learn from this experience and regroup, a bright future and further success will surely come their way.
The club would like to congratulate the U21 Footballers who after capturing the South West U21 B Football Championship were presented with the Buckley Financial Team of the Month Award for April last Thursday evening in a ceremony held at the GAA Pavilion. Buckley Financial CEO Tim Buckley and John Corcoran, chairman of the South West Board were on hand to praise the efforts of the team on their magnificent achievement and hoped that they would be back in Leap at a later time. Joseph Collins, team captain proudly accepted the award on behalf of the team on the night.
The club is now in possession of a defrillator and with a large group of officers and team officials now trained in the use of the defib and basic CPR it is hoped that if the need ever arises that the club will be able to deal with an incidents that may be happen.
All associated with the club are to be made aware that the Month’ Mind mass for Michael Crowley, late of Leap village, takes place this coming Saturday 1st June in Glandore church at 8pm.
Fixtures for the coming week are as follows: Minor Non Exam Football League vs Eire Og in Ovens on Bank Holiday Monday 3rd June at 7:30pm, Minor Non Exam Football League vs Glenville in Glenville on Thursday 6th June at 7:30pm
Notes 23/5/13
The Kilmacabea U21’s will make their first appearance in the County U21 B stage on Saturday evening next when they take on Muskerry champions Canovee in the Quarter Final of the County U21 B Football Championship. This will be new territory for this group of players and if they can reclaim the form that saw them overcome Ballinascarthy, Tadgh MacCarthaigh and Clann Na nGael (after a replay) to claim the West Cork U21 B championship crown then we will be in for a cracking hour’s entertainment. The game takes place on Saturday 25th at 7pm in Ballineen and all supporters are encouraged to come out and roar the lads on to victory.
The club is now in possession of a defibrillator and all club coaches and selectors have been trained in the use of this vital piece of equipment. This one piece of medical equipment can save lives and the club is all too aware of the need for one, especially with the increase of players and mentors who are struck down every year by Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS). This is why last Monday evening a large group of volunteers received their certification on first aid and in the use of the defibrillator in the clubhouse. Many thanks must go to all those that took part and especially Jennifer Sweetnam, Breda O Donovan, Kay Ronan and Sheila Calnan for all their hard work in getting this training put in place.
Alas it was not to be for Richie O Sullivan and Niall Hayes and the rest of the Cork Minor panel as their season was cut abruptly short last Wednesday evening when a physically stronger Tipperary team defeated them by 0-11 to 0-8 in the Munster Minor Football Semi Final played in Thurles. This was a great disappointment for both players as they had put immense time and enough into training for this championship. It must also be noted the commitment of both Niall and Richie showed to travelling for each session and match and especially Niall who managed to make it back onto the panel after a horrific knee injury in 2012.

The club would also like to wish Oisin O Driscoll a speedy recovery after he suffered a broken hand in a recent Sciath Na Scoil game in Glengariff playing for Leap National School. Hopefully you’ll be recovered in time for championship Oisin!!

Also very well done to all those club members who took part in the recent Today FM Shave or Dye event that took place last Saturday night in the The Leap Inn.
The club would like to wish the very best of luck to both Richie O Sullivan and Niall Hayes and the rest of the Cork minor panel against Tipperary in the Munster Minor Football Championship semi- final that is to be played this week.

All those who took part in the recent defibrillator course in the GAA Pavilion, are asked to attend the same venue on Monday the 20th of May, as certificates will be handed out on the night. Everyone involved is asked to be at the GAA Pavilion for 7:30pm.

Notes 13/5/13

The U14 footballers played Newcestown in Newcestown on Monday 13th May. The team played with the wind in the first half and with the sun behind them and working well together they were able to put together decent scores. Newcestown came back at them in the second half and set about reducing the gap and while it looked as if it could go either way for a while the Kilmacs were able to reaffirm their position for the win. This was a strong performance especially from the more experienced players. Ian Jennings had a good game at full back and later when he had the legs when needed out the field. Jamie Ronan picked up the world of ball in all areas of defence and used it well. Jamie O'Donoghue covered acres of ground and was equal to everything that came his way. Damien Gore got through a huge amount of work and was prominent on the score board as well. Myles Tobin linked well with those around him. Ashley Deane had a super game at center forward showing well and winning ball, getting some fine scores, even if at time he was over generous in giving his team mates opportunities and got alot of attention from the opposition. Keith Whelton showed well and linked effectively. Conor Nash settled in well and contributed a fine score. Ellis Wilson led the line well, always available and able to take scores and link with other players. Oisin O'Driscoll settled into the game showing his skill as the game progressed. Team Adrian Gore, Jamie Ronan, Ian Jennings, Odran Kerrisk, Eolan Dineen, Jamie O'Donoghue, Dara Tobin, Damien Gore 1-8, Myles Tobin 0-1, Oisin O'Driscoll 0-2, Ashley Deane 1-2, Keith Whelton 0-1, Ciaran Hernon, Ellis Wilson 1-1, Conor Nash 0-1, David Whelton, Christy Wilson, Sean Burke.

Club Notes 3/5/13

Last Sunday was a day which brought both joy and sadness to the club and also to the local community. When we woke on Sunday morning with championship fever, it was quickly tempered with sadness when we heard that Michael Crowley; Kilmacabea had been called to his eternal reward after a short illness. Michael will be fondly remembered by all those in the community as a hard working, honest man who always had the time and energy to help with whatever event or project was ongoing in the locality. It was with his help that Kilmacabea GAA were afforded the opportunity, to buy and ultimately develop John William Goulding Park into the fantastic facility that it is today. The club will be forever grateful for he did and we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Margaret and the whole Crowley family on Michael’s passing. Ar dheis de go raibh anam.
It was with this sad news that the Junior A footballers travelled to Rath to take on the 2010 champions, Gabriel Rangers in the first round of the Buckley Financial sponsored Junior A Football Championship. On a bright day, with a stiff breeze blowing in from Baltimore harbour both sides served up a marvellous hour’s football, and it was fitting that the  Kilmacs honoured Michael’s memory by winning on a score-line of Kilmacabea 2-10  Gabriel Rangers 0-13. A tight tense opening saw the Kilmacs struggle with the Gabriel’s forwards and it looked like another long afternoon for the Kilmacs. But credit to this bunch of players, they hung in there, and inspired by team captain Sam O Driscoll,  and Ger O Donovan the Kilmacs managed to go in at half time level at five points apiece. The pivotal moment in this game came ten minutes into the second half when, a searing run by Sam O Driscoll ended with Ger O Donovan rifling to the Gabriel’s net. The game still wasn’t over but the gap of three points was still maintained and when full back Eoin O Donovan crashed a second goal to the net with a little over ten minutes to go, the result was then in no doubt. A late surge was not enough for the western men and it will be the Kilmacs who will march on to the next round of the championship in early July.
The club was also proud last Friday night as a small band of supporters made the journey to Austin Stack Park  Tralee to watch Richie O Sullivan and the rest of the Cork minors as they disposed of Kerry’s challenge on a score-line of Cork 3-6  Kerry 0-10 in a tense Electric Ireland Munster Minor Football Championship 1st Round replay. Notes 23/4/13

This past week was a quiet week for the club on the playing pitch, so attention turned to those who were representing the club at both county and divisional level. It was with great pride that a small band of supporters travelled to Pairc Ui Rinn last Friday night to see two Kilmacabea men in action for the Cork Minors against our old foes Kerry.  The likes of John Daly, Sean Crowley, Kevin McCarthy, Barry Glavin and Daniel O Donovan have all wore the famous blood and bandage of the county before at this level, but those that travelled on Friday night were delighted to see two Kilmacabea players named in the match day squad. Niall Hayes and Richie O Sullivan have both worked hard to get their chance to represent their county and were both involved as the Cork Minors came from behind to grab an unlikely draw on a score-line of Cork 2-13 Kerry 2-13 After extra time. The replay takes place this Friday 26th of April at 7:30pm in Austin Stack Park in Tralee.

Then on Sunday Joseph Collins, represented the Carbery Senior Footballers as they fought out a 3-11 to 2-11 extra time victory over Beara in the Colleges/Divisions section of the Cork County Senior Football Championship played in Adrigole.

Attention this weekend reverts to local action, as the junior footballers enter the championship fray on Sunday, when they take on Gabriel Rangers in the first round of the Buckley Financial Junior A Football Championship. This game is fixed for 3pm in Rath, Baltimore and a large crowd is expected for this highly anticipated first round game. The Kilmacs will be hoping that they can negotiate this hurdle and set their sights on a summer of championship football ahead.
Fixtures for the coming week: Junior A Football Championship 1st Round vs Gabriel Rangers on Sunday 28th April at 3pm in Rath, Baltimore.

Underage activity
Currently most of the activity at underage levels has been on the hurling side as part of St Patricks. While things are still at the settling in period and getting to know faces, progress is being made. While the score lines may not be positive there are definitely indications of commitment and spirit and with games will come a better understanding and improvement in the skill levels.
The U14 Hurlers played Bandon in Bandon on Thursday and while they lost there was a general improvement in the team display.

The U10 footballers had their first outing of the season when they took part in a blitz in Skibbereen and it was enjoyed by all.

Upcoming fixtures as follows
Minor hurling v Clonakilty in Clonakilty on Thursday 25th April at 19.15
U14 Hurling v Barryroe in Rath on Thursday 25th April at 19.15
U12 Football v Ilen Rovers in Leap on Saturday 27th April at 11am
U16 Hurling v Kilbree in Rossmore on Monday 29th April at 19.15
U13 Football championship V Carbery Rangers B on Wednesday 1st May in Castlehaven at 19.30
U10 Football v Carbery Rangers in Ross on Wednesday 1st May at 19.00

There is also hurling training for U10 and U12 taking place in Leap on Monday evenings under the guidance of John Collins. All newcomers are welcome to try it out.

Club Notes 16/4/13

With the euphoria of the U21 victory last weekend, this past weekend was back to league action with both junior teams involved.

The junior B footballers travelled to Ballydehob on Friday night to take on Gabriel Rangers while the junior A footballers took on Barryroe in Barryroe on Sunday morning.
A youthful second string lined up under the lights in Ballydehob to take on the hosts, and can count them-selves unlucky not to get anything from the game after a stirring second half comeback but ultimately losing out on a score line of Gabriel Rangers 1-13 Kilmacabea 2-9. The team started sluggishly and found them-selves pinned back into their own half for long periods of the half. But with a few canny switches the Kilmacs finally got a few scores on the board, but the concession of a soft penalty left them trail by nine points at half time.
It took until ten minutes into the second half for the Kilmacs to awaken from their slumber and two quick-fire goals from Colin McCarthy and Brian O Donovan turned the game in the Kilmacs favour and they led by two points. But ill discipline and lack of match practice was ultimately to cost the team in the end.

The junior A team was in Barryroe on Sunday morning to take on the home side in section one of the football league. With the 1st round of the championship fixed for the 28th of April at 3pm in Rath vs Gabriel Rangers, this game was very important to boost confidence before that championship encounter. A lively Kilmac side started this game well, even though the under-foot conditions and strong wind militated against quality football, but the Kilmacs still lead at half time. A more tactical second half didn’t yield the scores that both sides were looking for, but the Kilmacs higher work rate and better use of the football helped them to a 2-12 to 2-2 victory.

The Rebel Og underage championship draws were made last Friday night and are as follows:
Minor A Semi Final: Kilmacabea vs winners of Ahan Gaels/Naomh Aban
U16 C Quarter Final: Kilmacabea vs Castletownbere
U14 B Quarter Final: Kilmacabea vs O Donovan Rossa
U13 Championship vs Carbery Rangers ‘B’ in Castlehaven on Wednesday May 1st at 7:30pm.

The club would like to wish Niall Hayes and Richie O Sullivan the very best of luck, along with the rest of the Cork minor panel, as they take on Kerry in the Quarter Final of the Munster Minor Football Championship on Friday night, 19th of April at 7pm in Pairc Ui Rinn.

Congratulations to Damian Gore who was part of the Carbery Beara U14 football team that won the inter divisional blitz in CIT recently.

The U12 Football team started their playing season on Friday night with a tough assignment when they were away to Castlehaven with victory going to the home team

Fixtures for the coming week
Thursday 18th April Minor H, St Patricks v Bantry n Leap at 19.00
Thursday 18th April U14 H St Patricks v Bandon in Bandon at 19.00
Monday 22nd April U16H St Patricks v Pedlars Cross in Aughaville at 19.15
As fixtures are likely to change check prior to travelling

St Patricks (Kilmacabea, O’Donovan Rossa, Ilen Rovers and Tadgh MacCartaigh) make the club debut on the playing fields on Thursday 18th April.
The U14 hurlers played Ballinascarthy in Rath. While the score indicated there was a gap the sides were balanced and the visitors better understanding gave them a small edge. Indications are that the team would be competitive as understanding among players grows. On this team were Jamie O’Donoghue, Ellis Wilson, Conor Nash, Myles Tobin and Ian Jennings.
The minor hurlers were also in action on the same night in Enniskeane when they took on Ahan Gaels. Again the more experienced team had the advantage. This team would have potential with some players missing and their opponents would be at a higher grade. Kilmacabea representatives on the night were Martin Collins, Euan Tobin and Tiernan Kerisk

Club Notes 8/4/13

(Theses are the same as the facebook site except for underage fixtures)

‘’Hunger, desire and an insatiable appetite for work and to win”, these were some of the words that club chairman William Williamson used last Sunday evening after the club captured their fourth South West u21 B Football title in ten years after a hard fought 1-4 to 0-4 win over Clann Na nGael in wet and windy Aughaville. This was a win that was based on hard- work, team- work and an undying spirit which has been a feature of this team’s championship campaign this year.
On a day when even the ducks didn’t want to venture out, the Kilmacs finally had their day in the sun, when in the grey skies of Aughaville they outfought a highly fancied Clann outfit. The winning of the game came before the throw in when the Kilmacs won the toss and elected to play with the gale force wind at their backs. The opening minutes were fraught with nerves as both sides looked to gain an advantage. The advantage came the Kilmacs way when, in the tenth minute a free from lively corner forward Kevin Whooley dropped short and a grateful Oisin O Sullivan drove home to the net to open up a three point gap. This was soon followed by two quick Joseph Collins points, one from a free and the Kilmacs now had a 1-2 to no score lead. Credit to Clann, they keep trying but against a stead fast Kilmac defence, well marshalled by full back John O Sullivan, corner back Thomas Jennings and Niall Hayes at centre back , they kept them at bay until Damian O Brien managed to break free and register their first score after twenty three minutes. Joseph Collins and Diarmuid O Callaghan added two further points to leave the half time score, Kilmacabea 1-4 Clann Na nGael 0-1.
The second half will live long in the memory for all those in attendance as the Kilmac lads produced a heroic half an hour of constant defending, akin to what Donegal produced two years ago, to keep the Clann team at bay. It was a credit to the team that it took Clann all of twenty five  minutes to register a score with the wind, which was quickly followed by two further points to reduced the arrears to three points, but with the outstanding Padraig Burke and John Sullivan proving to be immovable objects at the back the Kilmacs lads hung on, and when Tim Murnane blew the final whistle the scenes of unbridled joy were unparrelled. As captain Joseph Collins received the Margaret and Matthew O'Sullivan Memorial cup after the game he mentioned that nobody gave them a hope of winning the game, but he and the rest of the team were only too happy to prove them wrong.
The team will now take a well deserved rest before they tackle a county quarter-final against Muskerry champions Canovee sometime in mid summer.

The club has the honour of hosting the u21 A Football Final between Castlehaven and Clonakilty next Sunday at 3pm. All stewards are asked to attend at the club grounds from one o’clock onwards.

The club monthly draw results are as follows: 1st Michael Tobin, Kilfinnan 2nd Ann Burke, Maultrahane 3rd The O Donovan Family, The Quay 4th Sean Walshe, The Mall 5th Denjo Twomey, Madaranna 6th Helen Donovan, Ballyroe 7th Adrian Healy, Ballyhilow

Notes 4/4/13

If Our Lord or Lazarus had been present in Aughaville on Sunday last he would have definitely been on the side of the Kilmacs, as for the third time in this championship, they managed a miraculous comeback to draw this enthralling South West u21 B football championship final with Clanna Gael. When Richie O Sullivan escaped from the clutches of Clann fullback Paul Crowley and billowed the back of the net deep into injury time, a little tremor could have been felt in the Aughaville hinterland as the large Kilmac following celebrated a magnificent finish to an otherwise superb final played in driving wind and rain.

Playing against the strong breeze in the finish half, the Kilmac lads took a long time to get used to the conditions and this gave the Drimoleague/Drinagh outfit time to speed into an earlier lead. Quick-fire opening points by lively wing forward Paul Hickey, Eric Crowley and the industrious Gavin Connolly gave Clann the early foothold and a sweeping move in the fifteenth minute lead to Don O Driscoll crashing the ball to the Kilmac net leaving a six point gap to overcome. But never count out this Kilmac outfit, who with the Collins brothers at midfield ,centre back Niall Hayes and the creativity of wing forward Diarmuid O Callaghan, got to grips with the game and started to create openings of their own. No sooner had Clann hit the back of the Kilmac net, that the umpires at the opposite end were raising the green flag, when an effort for a point by Joe Collins dropped in the grateful arms of Diarmuid O Callaghan who dispatched the leather to the net. He soon followed this up with pointed free to leave the score-line Kilmac1-1 Clanna Gael 1-3. The Clann forward line profited from a little indiscipline in the Kilmac defence and landed two more points to leave the half time score Kilmac 1-1 Clanna Gael 1-5.

With the words of the Kilmac management ringing in their ears the Kilmac lads turned to play with the breeze at their backs and renewed endeavour they set about over turning the deficit. With commanding John O Sullivan at full back, the tigerish Niall Hayes and Martin Collins, the lads started the brighter and only for some wasteful shooting could have been back level. The ever dangerous Joe Collins finally landed his side’s second point and the pressure was increasing around the Clann goal mouth. Some good link up play landed Clanna their sixth and seventh points of the game and at this stage it looked very bleak for the Kilmac lads, even with two pointed frees from Diarmuid O Callaghan and one from Kevin Whooley and Kilmac goal was badly needed to swing the game back in their favour. A late Clann point with two minutes of normal time stretched their lead to four points and it looked very bad for the Kilmacs A point from full forward Richie O Sullivan cut the gap to three points heading into injury time, and the dramatic end to this contest. Solid custodian Padraig Burke’s kick out was well fielded by captain Joe Collins, who fed the tireless Diarmuid O Callaghan. A mazy run by the wing forward opened up some space and a perfectly timed pass to Richie O Sullivan put the Kilmac speedster away. With over thirty metres to the Clann goal and a major needed to tie the game, it was in little doubt what the Kilmac full forward needed to do. His beautifully arched shot past the despairing dive of Clann custodian Donnacha Shanahan into the net begun scenes of joy through the Kilmac supporters and mentors and when referee Donal Shorten blew the final whistle moments later the relief within the Kilmac camp was immense. The final score of this thrilling final, playing in a fine sporting air, was Kilmacabea 2-5 Clann Na nGael 1-8.

The replay of the u21 B Football Final will take place next Sunday 7th April at 3pm in Aughaville. All support will be greatly appreciated as the lads go in search of the crown last annexed in 2008.

Notes 26/3/13

The u21 footballers took centre stage this weekend when they took on near neighbours and great rivals Tadgh MacCarthaigh in the semi final of the Clona Milk u21 B Football Championship played at a wet and wind Rossa Park, Skibbereen last Saturday evening. After a thrilling hour of football, where no quarter was asked or given by both sides it was the Kilmac lads who emerged victorious on a score-line of Kilmacabea 0-11 Tadgh MacCarthaigh 0-10.
The Kilmac lads settled to their task well and with the aid of a strong breeze took an early 0-2 to 0-0 lead after ten minutes. But this Tadgh MacCarthaigh team are nothing but tigerish and lead by Cork u21 player Brian O Driscoll levelled the scores after 15 minutes. With very little between the sides the lead swapped hands again before Diarmuid O Callaghan gave the Kilmacs the lead in the 29th minute, to give the Kilmacs a slender one point advantage at the interval, Kilmacabea 0-5  Tadgh MacCarthaigh 0-4. The second half continued in much the same vain as the first, with both sides trading scores to leave the tie finally balanced heading into the final quarter. The switch of Patrick Kirby to full forward helped the Caheragh lads open up a one point lead before Padraig Burke, the every reliable Kilmac custodian, pulled off a great penalty save which left the gap at two points with little time remaining. But one final effort from the Kilmac lads managed to level the tie going into injury time and a little bit of good fortune gave Diarmuid O Callaghan the opportunity to win the game for the Kilmacs. Wild celebrations followed the final whistle by referee David Whyte and meant the Kilmacs were back in the final of this competition for the first time since 2008, where they will take on Clann Na Gael.
That u21 final vs Clann Na Gael is provisionally fixed for Easter Sunday 31st March in Aughaville with a 3pm throw in. A large crowd will be expected on the day so make any extra special effort to come out and cheer the lads onto victory.
After the excitement of Saturday, it was back to league action on Sunday, when the junior footballers entertained Bandon in Section 1 of the football league in Leap. Minus the u21 contingent the team, the team competed well with a physical strong Bandon side and were unlucky to be behind at the short whistle, Kilmacabea 0-4 Bandon 0-6. Playing some nice football but guilty of overplaying the ball at times the Kilmac lads found hitting the target a struggle and Bandon, who were more economical with the ball, managed to grind out a  victory on the score-line  of Kilmacabea 0-6  Bandon 0-10. Although it is early in their season, this game gave the team much food for thought and will help them build for their 1st round championship encounter against Gabriel Rangers on April 28th in Baltimore at 3pm.
The u16 footballers were also in league action on Sunday morning when they travelled to Clonaklity to take on the home side. Playing some excellent football they were unlucky to come out the wrong side of the score-line, Kilmacabea 5-9 Clonaklity ‘B’ 8-5. The game was also notable for a nasty injury to young Eoin O Sullivan, who is only after resuming playing after a year out of football. All within the club would like to wish Eoin all the best with his recovery from this injury.
As part of the schools coaching program, 80 boys and girls from 3rd to 6th class from Maultrahane, Leap and Glandore NS assembled in the GAA pitch for a school blitz on Wednesday 20th. Four teams of 10 boys played three 20 minute games and four teams of girls also played three 20 minute games. The Kilmacabea club would like to thank the three schools for taking part in the program and would also like to thank Kevin Whooley and Shane McDermott for referring the games.
The club would also like to congratulate the Instrumental group who finished 2nd at the County Scor Na bPaisti finals held at the GAA Pavilion in Ovens over the weekend. The group consisting of Chantelle and Katelyn French, Saoirse and Davina Connolly and Clara Dineen put in a great display of traditional Irish music. Great credit must go to their mentor, Martina French for putting in great work with this group for the past number of months.
Fixtures for the coming week: U21 B Football Championship final vs Clann Na Gael on Easter Sunday 31st of March in Aughaville at 3pm. The junior football league game against Tadgh MacCarthaigh due to be played on Easter Sunday has now been re-fixed for the 2nd June.

Notes 18/3/13

The U 14 footballers played in the County Feile competition on Saturday 16th March. The competition was run off as a series of blitzes with games of 12minute halves. Kilmacabea were part of a group which played  at Ballygarvan.
The Kilmacs drew the short straw in that their first game was against the home team and eventual group winners and they were slow to start.  By half time they had found their feet and were back in the game behind  1- 2 to 0-3. For the third quarter playing some excellent football they put themselves in a good position and had edged two point s ahead. Unfortunately they got caught on the break for a couple of key scores which were their undoing. Final result was Kilmacabea 0-7 Ballygarvan 3-3. The second game was a titanic battle between two evenly matched sides. Whitechuch got the lead score but play was up and down and the Kilmacs equalised before half time. The Kilmacs got the key score mid-way through the second half and while both sides had chances the Kilmacs held out for a morale boosting victory on the score 1-1 to 0-1. In the next game they played Naomh Aban. The team was now playing  good football with confidence and a better balance to the side and were able to win the game on the score 1-6 to 0-4. In the final game they had too much for the St Finbarrs “B” team and went on to win 2-8 to 0-1. All in it was a super experience for the players and the team and players learned a lot from it. The team played some fine football throughout with a great effort, attitude and commitment from all who took part. Team Conor Nash, Mikey O’Mahony, Adrian  Gore, Odran Kerrisk, Ian Jennings, Jamie O’Donoghue, Jamie Ronan, Ashley Deane, Damien Gore, David Whelton, Myles Tobin, Dara Tobin, Oisin O’Driscoll, Ellis Wilson, Christy Wilson, Ciaran Hernon. The competition was run off efficently and with great hospitality by the home club

Club Notes 6/3/13

The U21 footballers stepped out in the heat of championship football last Sunday afternoon in Rossmore, when they took on Ballinascarthy in the Quarter final of the Clona Milk u21 B football championship. After a titanic battle in which the Kilmacs looked dead and buried midway through the second half and strong final quarter, coupled with superior fitness helped the Kilmacs come out on top after extra time, on a score line of Kilmacabea 1-12 Ballinascarthy 0-14.
On a dry cold day, on a decent sod both sides played out a marvellous game of attacking football under the watchful eye of referee, David Whyte (St.Marys). It was the eastern men who started quicker and had five points on the board in the opening quarter of an hour, before the Kilmacs raised their first white flag with a Richie O Sullivan free in the 18th minute. With the full back line of Martin Collins, Kieran O Sullivan and Thomas Jennings having a torrid time keeping the Bal full forward line and especially corner forward Aidan O Donovan at bay, it looked like Bal would cut loose and end the Kilmacs charge before it even begun. But credit to the Kilmac lads they dug in and with captain Joe Collins a power house at midfield, reduced the deficit at half time to four points, thanks to a second point from Declan O Sullivan leaving the score Kilmacabea 0-2 Ballinascarthy 0-6 at the short whistle. If the first half belonged to Bal, the second belonged to the Kilmacs lads. Trailing by seven points with fifteen minutes to go, it looked all but lost, but with some reshuffling of the pack most notably the redeployment of Martin Collins to the midfield sector the Kilmacs began to claw their way back into the game. Four quick points from Declan O Sullivan (2), Oisin O Sullivan and Kevin Whooley cut the gap to three points and when Oisin O Sullivan poked home for the only goal of the game in the 59th minute the momentum was well and truly with the Kilmacs. Even with a player being dismissed, the Kilmacs hung on and managed to force extra time. In the additional two periods the Kilmacs dominated and despite a missed penalty managed to eke out a one point win.
While it was a great victory, the team will know that a much improved overall display will be needed if they want to advance further in the competition. The team that defeated Ballinascarthy was: Padraig Burke, Kieran O Sullivan, Martin Collins (0-1), Thomas Jennings, Sean O Regan, Niall Hayes, Liam Thompson, John O Sullivan, Joseph Collins, Aidan Williamson, Declan O Sullivan (0-3), Diarmuid O Callaghan (0-1), Kevin Whooley (0-2), Richie O Sullivan (0-4, 0-2 from frees), Oisin O Sullivan (1-1). Subs: Shane McDermott, Padraig McCarthy, Odhran Connolly.
The u14 footballers also had a victory on Sunday, when they defeated O Donovan Rossa in their first league game of their season, on a score line of Kilmacabea 4-18 O Donovan Rossa 7-7. This was a game that at times the Kilmacs were well on top and at other times in serious trouble. For a first outing it was good performance and all the more satisfying with the win at the end. It was close but would have been disappointing to lose. Team Conor Nash, Mikey OMahony, Adrian Gore, Jamiee Ronan, Orahan Kerrisk, Jamie O’Donoghue, Myles Tobin, Ashley Deane, Damian Gore, Gareth Whooley, Ian Jennings, Dara Tobin, Oisin O’Driscoll, Ellis Wilson, Ciaran Hernon, David Whelton, Christy Wilson, Eoin Burns

In the Scor Na bPaisti West Cork finals last Friday night in Rossmore, the music group consisting of Chantelle and Katelyn French, Saoirse and Davina Connolly and Clara Dineen won their catergory, Kate O Donovan came 2nd in the recitation, and Chantelle French came 2nd in the Solo Dancing. The other performers on the night were Olivia O Sullivan in Solo Singing and the Novelty Act of Aoife Hernan, Kate O Donovan, Ben Christie, Chantelle French, Clara Dineen and Dara Tobin. Congratulations to all those involved on the night.
The club would like to extend thanks to all those who helped out at the U21 game on Saturday last. Without these volunteers who give up their time to help park cars, sell tickets, prepare the pitch, hosting these games would not be possible.
All Club Members are also reminded that the Sports Prophet deadline is Friday 8th March, so get your entries in ASAP, either online at www.sportsprophet.ie or contact Dan Hourihane for a paper entry form.
