This past weekend turned out to be a very on one on the playing
field as all three teams that represented the club all enjoyed victories.
Firstly the minor footballers took on Canovee in the Minor Non Exam League in
leap on Friday evening. With wins over Kinsale, Bandon and Glenville all ready
in the bag, this was always going to be a keenly contested affair, as a victory
for the Kilmacs would guarantee them a semi final place. Having already beaten
the Kilmacs at u21 level earlier in the season, Canovee knew that they would
face an extremely motivated Kilmac outfit. This proved to be the case, as a
fluid Kilmac outfit tore into the visitors from Muskerry and had established a
comfortable 3-9 to 0-7 lead at the interval, Kevin Whooley, Richie O Sullivan and
Shane McDermott getting the goals. A change of pace in the second half saw the
visitors work tirelessly to try and regain a foothold, but with a full back as
sturdy as Martin Collins and a half back line of Seamus Murphy, Gavin Daly and
Shane McDermott never wilting the Kilmacs ran out comfortable winners on a
score-line of Kilmacabea 4-16 Canovee 0-14. This result now means that they
have qualified for the semi finals of this competition.
The junior second team made the trip to Bandon on Friday evening
last and put in a magnificent display of commitment and dogged determination to
turn over the home side on a score line of Kilmacabea 1-11 Bandon 0-4. This was
a great victory for this group of players, many of who have the potential to be
involved in the first team later in the summer. The efforts of Brian Hayes,
Peadar O Leary and the imperious Adrian O Driscoll at centre back laid the
foundations for this great win and with Noel O Donoghue, Colin McCarthy,
Richard Jennings and Barry Glavin also putting in impressive display’s, this
team will hope to carry this form forward for the rest of the season.
The junior A footballers were the last team in action at the
weekend, when they welcomed Clann na Gael to John William Goulding Park on
Sunday morning in Section One of the football league. On a well presented sod
and under a sweltering sun, both sides put in a fine hour of football with a
more determined Kilmac outfit taking the spoils on a score-line of Kilmacabea
1-12 Clann na Gael 0-6. This game never reached the heights of the drama
witnessed when the two sides met in the u21 championship earlier in the year,
as the Kilmacs dominated much of the possession and possessed much more in the
attack sector of the field. A Sam O Driscoll goal mid way through the first
half gave the home side a healthy lead which they never yielded.

The junior A footballers were in
action again in section one of the league last saturday evening when they
travelled to durrus to take on the home side Muintir Bhaire. With a number of
players unavailable this was a good
chance for some of the fringe squad members to stake their claim for a starting
place in the team for the next round of the championship. On a poor playing
surface the Kilmacs wasted no time displaying their superiority over the hosts
with two first half goals gave the team a half- time lead of 2-7 to 1-6. Credit
to the home side , who over the past few years have been struggling due to
emigration, put in a battling second half display and can be happy with their
hour’s work. For the Kilmacs, a third goal midway through the second half killed
the contest and they ran out comfortable winners on a score line of Kilmacabea
3-14 Muintir Bhaire 1-13.
The club would like to congratulate a number of it’s members and
associate members for their performances on the field over the past month. Damien
Gore, Jamie O Donoghue, Ellis Wilson and
Myles Tobin who were part of the Mount Saint
Michael Secondary School County U14 winning football team recently.
Damien is also a member of the Carbery
U14 development squad and the club wish him well as he continues to impress on
the playing fields. A mention must also go to the Mt Saint Michael Senior
Footballers, who captured the Cork Colleges ‘B’ Football title recently and
also received the Buckley Financial Team of the Month for May. This side was
captained by Kilmacabea’s very own Liam
Thompson and also in the squad were Martin Collins, Niall Hayes, Matthew O
Neill and Richie O Sullivan.
The club would also like to
congratulate the Maultrahane NS Girls football team, who recently won their
section of the West Cork Sciath na Scoil football tournament. This achievement
means that they have now won their section for an astonishing 11th year in a
row, which is a tremendous accolade in any grade of gaelic football!!. Well
done also to Kate O Donovan, Maultrahane who will have the honour of representing Cork in the Primary
Schools game at half time in Munster Senior Football Final in Killarney in
July. Everyone in the club wishes you all the best for this fantastic
achievement.

The minor
footballers got the playing action underway this week when they made the
journey to Kinsale to take on the home side in the first game of the Minor Non
Examination Football League. This competition is played on a league basis and
Kilmacabea are in a group consisting of Bandon, Eire Og, Glenville, Canovee and
Kinsale played on a 12-a-side basis. Unfortunately for all this game turned out to be a
procession, where a better balanced and more efficient Kilmac outfit providing
way too strong for the home side and running out comfortable winners on a
score-line of Kinsale 0-5 Kilmacabea 4-10. It was a useful exercise in the
respect that it gave management a chance to look at fringe players and a brace
of goals, one from a penalty from impressive wing forward Podge Cronin will
give them some food for thought going into the remaining fixtures in this
competition. This team are due to play Bandon in Leap on this Tuesday evening
in the same competition.
Action
continued on Saturday evening last, when all roads led to Enniskeane for the
eagerly awaited County U21 B Football Championship Quarter Final against
Muskerry champions Canovee. After capturing the South West title against a much
fancied Clann Na Gael outfit, the Kilmacs felt that they could rattle the
county competition and pushed this well tuned Canovee side very close. After an
outstanding hour’s football, were the efforts of Martin Collins, Diarmuid O
Callaghan and John O Sullivan keeping the Kilmacs in the hunt right until the
final whistle, it was heartbreaking to see this young team come within one
point of a huge upset but alas Lazarus was not to been seen this time and they
went down on a score-line of Kilmacabea 0-11 Canovee 1-9. It was an outstanding
achievement to capture the South West championship which such a young side and
all credit has to go to the management team of Adrian and Brendan O Driscoll,
Timothy O Mahony and Johnny O Sullivan for putting in countless hours on the
training field early in the year that ultimately lead to that championship
success. If this team can learn from this experience and regroup, a bright
future and further success will surely come their way.
The club would
like to congratulate the U21 Footballers who after capturing the South West U21
B Football Championship were presented with the Buckley Financial Team of the
Month Award for April last Thursday evening in a ceremony held at the GAA
Pavilion. Buckley Financial CEO Tim Buckley and John Corcoran, chairman of the
South West Board were on hand to praise the efforts of the team on their
magnificent achievement and hoped that they would be back in Leap at a later
time. Joseph Collins, team captain proudly accepted the award on behalf of the
team on the night.
The club is
now in possession of a defrillator and with a large group of officers and team
officials now trained in the use of the defib and basic CPR it is hoped that if
the need ever arises that the club will be able to deal with an incidents that
may be happen.
All
associated with the club are to be made aware that the Month’ Mind mass for
Michael Crowley, late of Leap village, takes place this coming Saturday 1st
June in Glandore church at 8pm.

The
Kilmacabea U21’s will make their first appearance in the County U21 B stage on
Saturday evening next when they take on Muskerry champions Canovee in the
Quarter Final of the County U21 B Football Championship. This will be new
territory for this group of players and if they can reclaim the form that saw
them overcome Ballinascarthy, Tadgh MacCarthaigh and Clann Na nGael (after a
replay) to claim the West Cork U21 B championship crown then we will be in for
a cracking hour’s entertainment. The game takes place on Saturday 25th
at 7pm in Ballineen and all supporters are encouraged to come out and roar the
lads on to victory.
The club is
now in possession of a defibrillator and all club coaches and selectors have
been trained in the use of this vital piece of equipment. This one piece of
medical equipment can save lives and the club is all too aware of the need for
one, especially with the increase of players and mentors who are struck down
every year by Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS). This is why last Monday
evening a large group of volunteers received their certification on first aid
and in the use of the defibrillator in the clubhouse. Many thanks must go to
all those that took part and especially Jennifer Sweetnam, Breda O Donovan, Kay
Ronan and Sheila Calnan for all their hard work in getting this training put in
place.
Alas it was
not to be for Richie O Sullivan and Niall Hayes and the rest of the Cork Minor
panel as their season was cut abruptly short last Wednesday evening when a
physically stronger Tipperary team defeated them by 0-11 to 0-8 in the Munster
Minor Football Semi Final played in Thurles. This was a great disappointment
for both players as they had put immense time and enough into training for this
championship. It must also be noted the commitment of both Niall and Richie showed
to travelling for each session and match and especially Niall who managed to
make it back onto the panel after a horrific knee injury in 2012.
The club
would also like to wish Oisin O Driscoll a speedy recovery after he suffered a
broken hand in a recent Sciath Na Scoil game in Glengariff playing for Leap
National School. Hopefully you’ll be recovered in time for championship Oisin!!
