Club Notes 23/1/13

The U21’s were in action again last Sunday when they took on Beal Atha Ghaorthaidh in the second game of the Glenville Invitational Football tournament. On a bitterly cold day in John William Goulding Park on a very wet  sod, both sides played out a superb game of attacking football. With a lightning start Beal Atha stormed into the lead, but with Richie O Sullivan and John O Sullivan getting into their rhythm the Kilmac lads soon set about eating into the lead. With some flowing moves the Kilmacs only trailed at the break by a point, Kilmacabea 2-3  Beal Atha 1-7. With both sides continuing the same brand of football in the second half, ever score was crucial and with Richie O Sullivan hitting his third goal of the game the Kilmacs were looking the likely winners. But this Beal Atha don’t know when their beaten, they drew level with time almost up.  With time up the Kilmacs thought the game was won but the ref had a different score to most of the crowd and extra time was the order of the day. The relentless pace of the game eventually caught up with the Kilmac lads and they succumbed to the men from the North West but two points on a score of Kilmacabea 3-10 Beal Atha Ghaorthaidh 2-15. While it was a disappointing way for the game to end the team will benefit from these early season games and hopefully they will take this form into the upcoming West Cork championship.

All club members are invited to attend a medal presentation for the victorious U13 championship winners and Minor football league winners this Saturday night 26^th January at the GAA Pavilion at 8:00pm. Donal Og Hodnett from O Donovan Rossa is the special guest on the night. Donal was a member of the Cork u21 football team that defeated Kerry in the Munster U21 football last year and also captained the CIT footballers against Cork earlier this month in the McGrath Cup. Also on the night the club will present the Player, Young player and Club person of the year awards. So come along to celebrate these two great team’s achievements.

Everyone is reminded that the club is still collecting scrap metal at the club grounds until the end of the month. 

Club Notes 15/1/13

The under 21 footballers got the playing season underway last Sunday 13/1/13, when they took on Kilmurry in the opening game of the Glenville U21 Invitational Football Tournament at John William Goulding Park. On a dry cold day and with soft underfoot conditions both sides started slowly and it wasn’t until Richie O Sullivan hit the back of the Kilmurry net mid-way through the first half that the Kilmacs began to take control. Playing some fast attacking football the home side went in at the break ahead, 1-5 to 0-4. When the teams resumed for the second half the Kilmacs once again showed they were the superior outfit and with Oisin O Sullivan grabbing the second Kilmac goal the result was never in doubt with the Kilmacs running out winners on a score line of Kilmacabea  2-11  Kilmurry 1-5. A medal presentation for the u13 footballers and the minor football league winners will take place on the 26^th of January at 8:30pm in the GAA Pavilion. All parents of potential and existing underage players are reminded that the club will be holding its annual Underage Registration night this Friday 18^th of January at 8:30pm in the GAA Pavilion. Parents are also reminded that as of the 1^st of January, gum shields are now compulsory for all players up to and including U18. To this end the club will be supplying Gum shields, which will be available to purchase on the night at a cost of €5.

The club’s scrap metal collection is on-going and will be until the end of the month. If anyone has any unwanted scrap metal that they wish to dispose of, please bring it the GAA grounds before the end of January.

The club would also like to extend its congratulations to local woman Ruthann Sheahan on winning the West Cork Sports Star of the Year award recently held at the Celtic Ross Hotel Rosscarbery.

Club Notes 2/1/13

The second annual Kilmacabea GAA Quiz took place in The Leap Inn on Thursday 27^th of December last. A large crowd was in attendance for what turned out to be a hugely enjoyable evening. A lot of head scratching went on as twenty-six teams were tested on their knowledge of topics ranging from local sport to agricultural definitions. After five rounds of intense concentration and no little brain power the winners emerged as the quartet of Alexei O’Leary, Clara Wolfe, Liam Wolfe and John O Donovan (the quay). Congratulations to the winning team and to all who took part and helped make the night a great success.

A raffle was also held on the night as a fundraiser for the junior player’s fund, and at time of writing the figure raised was approx €1500. The presentation of medals to the victorious Junior 3 also took place with the team’s manager Noel Crowley as master of ceremonies. Noel thanked all the player’s who lined out throughout the year and mentioned that thirty four players had taken to the field for the second team in 2012. Noel recently celebrated a personal milestone which was also acknowledged on the night.

Club members are also reminded that voting is still open for Player, Young Player (under 16) and Club Person of the year and that these nominations can be sent to any of the club officers, so get voting please! The presentation of these awards and medals to the U13 championship winners and Minor Football league winners will take place on the 26^th January in the GAA Pavilion, time to be confirmed at a later date.

The club would also like to send its sincerest condolences to the O’Donovan family The Quay on the death of their grandmother Kitty recently. Ar dheis de go raibh anam.

Finally the club would like to wish all its members at home and abroad a very Happy New Year.

Club Notes 17/12/12

With the shadows falling on the playing fields for another year, it is time to reflect on the year just passed and make plans for the new playing year of 2013. Foundations are being laid for the latter already: next years’ Under-21 and Junior panels have commenced winter training. As for the former, medals hard-won on the field of play are due reward for some great displays, and are a tangible reminder of how success can be attained through hard work, dedication and teamwork.

Our annual quiz will be held on Thursday December 27^th in the Leap Inn at 8.30 p.m. On the night medals won by our championship-winning Junior C panel will be presented, and presentations to Player of the Year and Club Person of the Year will also be made. All are welcome and a great night is assured.

Club Notes 3/12/12

Kilmacabea GAA held its Annual General Meeting on Friday 30^th November at The GAA Pavilion at 8pm. A large enthuastic crowd was welcomed by chairman William Williamson. He thanked all club officers and members for their efforts throughout the year and especially Treasurer Pat O Callaghan who stepped down from his position after 25 years of service. The chairman also added special words of congratulations to the U13 and Junior C footballers who won their respective championships and also to the Minor footballers who won their section of the league. He thanked the Finance Committee for their huge effort in reviving a Festival in the parish and thanked all those for making it a huge success, the adjoining landowners James Crowley and Brian Sheahan for the use of their land for the hosting of large games. Martin Collins, Kilmacabea was congratulated for his success with the various Cork underage development squads and also the other members of the club who were involved in various Carbery and Cork teams throughout the year. He finished by remembering all those club members who have lost loved one’s throughout the year.

Secretary Donal O Donovan gave his usual comprehensive report of club activities for the year, most notable of these were the hosting of the Junior A Football Final in September and also the revival of the Community/Club Festival in August. He also thanked Pat O Callaghan for the sterling service that he has given the club as treasurer over the past 25 years and hoped that he would remain involved in the club for many years to come. He also wished all teams and club members the very best wishes for 2013.

Treasurer Pat O Callaghan gave his final financial report as treasurer and reported that the club as a whole was in a good financial state going into the future. He wished his successor all the best in the position and hopes to be involved in club matters for many years to come.

Notes 26/11/12

The minor footballers played Beal Atha’n Ghaorthaidh in the final of the league on Saturday 17^th November in Dunmanway. On a dry day the conditions were good.  While the team hadn’t played in a long time and preparations were patchy the team settled well and were on top from the start. With goals from Richie O’Sullivan and Declan O’Sullivan the team was dominant throughout the pitch and were well worth the half time lead of 2-6 to 1-0. The second half was the complete reverse.

Beal Atha’n Ghaorthaidh began to get on top around the middle and started to close the gap. By the 18^th minute the gap was down to 2 points and looking dangerous

The team managed to keep battling and were able to hold out for victory on the score of Kilmacabea 2-7. Beal Atha’n Ghaorthaidh 1-9. While it was hard won it was welcome and well done to all involved including mentors William Williamson, Kevin O’Driscoll, Martin O’Sullivan and Tom Hayes.  All members young and old are reminded that the AGM is on this Friday 30^th November in the Club House at 8pm. It is important to attend as decisions made affect the future of the club. A number of positions are to be filled incl Treasurer, PRO, Team Managers and Captains. Motions to be discussed include coaching for underage, insurance arrangements for players and the future of hurling in the club

Notes 17/11/12

The AGM is to be held on Friday 30^th December at 8pm. A number of positions are to be filled including Treasurer, PRO, County Board Representative, Junior and Minor Team managers or any post if there is interest. Team captains are also to be picked. It is important that people interested in the club should come along to have their input in how the club develops.

Club supporters are encouraged to renew their membership in the Club draw for the next year with the first draw being a combined two months at the start of December. This is an important part of fund raising with the money raised going to pay back the loan taken out for the redevelopment of the ground in 2009.

Pat Burke followed up his big win early in the year with another win in the October County Board draw.

Anyone interested in taking part in Scor is reminded to get in touch with William Williamson before Sunday 18^th as the competition will be starting the following week.
