Notes 28/8/12

The U14 footballers played the West Cork final against Ilen Rovers in Castlehaven, last Friday, August 24^th. The Kilmacs played the first half against the wind and the evening sun and it looked initially if the stronger Ilen had the advantages. The Kilmacs settled and with economic use of possession kicked some good scores to establish a lead. With the defence working well the team was in a good position coming up to half time 6 points ahead. The concession of two points at the end of the half left the score at Kilmacabea 0-6 Ilen Rovers 0-2. As expected Ilen made changes and came strong for the second half and the Kilmacs were struggling for possession. When Ilen Rovers goaled in the 8^th minute and followed up quickly with two points to go ahead it looked as if the game had turned. The following 10 minutes were exciting with both sides giving their all but neither scoring. When Ilen extended their lead in the twenty second minute it could be expected they would push on. Credit to the young Kilmacs as they lifted themselves and scored 2 points to level the game and take it to a replay. This was what underage football is all about, with both sides giving their all and little to separate them. Congratulations to Joseph O’Callaghan and Kieran O’Sullivan who were part of the Kilmacabea U21 crew that won a gold medal at the All Ireland coastal rowing finals held in Courtmacsherry on Sunday 26^th August.

Notes 21/8/12

The Cul camp was held recently and ran off successfully thanks to the organisation by John Collins. There was an attendance of 75 – 80. The enjoyment of the camp is due to the input of the mentors during the week including Sinead O’Brien(Kilmeen), Dan MacEoin(Ilen Rovers), Paudie Crowley(O’Donovan Rossa), Tommy Hayes, Marion O’Driscoll, Bernadette O’Driscoll, Timothy Nyhan and Kevin O’Driscoll. Ciaran Sheehan of the Cork footballers capped off the week for the youngsters. Thanks also to the parents who helped out with sandwiches and those who did catering.

The draw for the hamper in the recent community festival was won by Kerry Burchill and family, Rineen. Thanks to all who supported.

Notes 14/8/12

The U14 footballers were in championship action on Thursday 9^th June when they played Barryroe in the semi-final in Clonakilty. This game was never a contest and the game was decided very early with the Kilmac's being victorious in a game that was not good preparation for a final. 

The final of this competition vs. Ilen Rovers is fixed for Castlehaven on Friday 24^th August at 7pm. 

The U16hurlers played St James on Monday night in Ardfield. Being short on numbers meant the game couldn’t be won despite the efforts of those who made the effort to turn up. 

The first round of the U16 football championship has been put back to allow the completion of other competitions.

Notes 8/8/12

The junior C footballers took on Bantry in the championship in Leap on Friday 6^th August. It had been thought that there may be difficulties in fielding but with a good turn out from all it turned out to be a very solid display and the team goes forward to the next round after winning on the score 2-10 to 0-9 after a good display. 

The U16  footballers played Clanna Gael in the league and after a match where they had to work hard came out on top. 

Eileen Connolly, Corran won first prize in the latest monthly club draw. Second went to Ger O Sullivan, Dromillihy and third to James Nyhan, Gortroe. Consolation prize winners were Kay and Josie Ronan, Clounties; Joe O Donovan, Bawnfune; Margaret Crowley, Leap and James Crowley, Cappanaboha. 

The revived Community Festival took place over the weekend and was a great success. The hard working committee  had organised a wide range of activities and would like to thank all who participated and supported. It was welcome to see people give their time to get involved in the various events. The energy and imagination displayed in the festival rag parade on Sunday evening was a revelation and great to see. For some it bought back happy memories of festivals past and for others it will have created new memories that will hopefully be built on in years to come. Well done to all. It was a great community get together and is welcome, in these difficult times, to lift people’s spirits.

Notes 31/7/12

On Tuesday 24^th July the minor footballers played Naomh Aban in the championship in Ballineen.  With the team as a unit never performing to their potential they were beaten on the night on the score of 0-11 to 0-6. The U16 hurlers won their game in the league vs. St Colms in Kealkil on Thursday 26^th July.

Preparations are ongoing for the community festival which will run from 1^st - 6^th August. It is important to support events as efforts have been made to have something for everyone. 

The semi finals of the Fr Crowley cup involving all the National school pupils (3^rd -6^th classes) will be played on Friday 3^rd August at 6pm followed by the opening by Sean Kelly, MEP at 8pm. The play off finals will be played on Saturday evening at 6pm. Next week the Cul Camp runs from Tuesday 7^th to Friday 10^th August inclusive from 10 to 2pm each day. Roll call on the first day Tuesday is at 9.30am.

Congratulations to a number of club members for their achievements last weekend.

Shane O’Neill won a bronze medal in the All Ireland U17 javelin in Tullamore.

Kieran O’Sullivan, Liam Thompson, Alex Nowotynski, Mikey O’Mahony, Dara Tobin, Adrian Gore, Joseph O’Callaghan, Euan Tobin and  Caelan O’Mahony were part of crews that won medals in the Cork County Coastal rowing championship in Haulbowline on Sunday 29^th July.

The first prize winner in the July club draw was Rory O Brien, Shreelane, second went to Margaret Burke, Maulatrahane and third the O Donovan Family, West Quay. Consolation prizes were won by Amy and Joanne Hamilton, Glandore; Jimmy Kenneally, Drinagh; Martin O Sullivan, Droum and Michael Tobin, Keamore.                                       

On Wednesday 18^th July the minor hurlers played St Colms in the championship in Skibbereen.  The team was slow to settle and the western men were much livelier playing with the wind and were in a strong position at half time ahead on the score 3-8 to 1-4. While the game may have appeared out of reach the team put in a great effort and worked very hard for the second half. While they dominated possession they were unable to convert this possession into scores and while the final score showed them losing 1-6 to 4-8 they had restored a lot of pride with their effort. 

On Friday evening the minor footballers played Clanna Gael in a competitive game that was a good preparation for the championship which will have been played by the time these notes are printed.

The U8 footballers took part in an excellently organised blitz in Dunmanway on Saturday 21^st July. The conditions were superb and this was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all involved and was a credit to the organisers.

News 17/7/12

On Tuesday 10^th July the U16 hurlers played Bantry in the championship  in Skibbereen.  The players put in a great effort and worked very hard. Unfortunately they were up against a team whose skill and touch was excellent. There was ability throughout the Bantry  team and as hard as the Kilmacs tried they were never going to be able to match this fine Bantry team, who would be far ahead of anything in West Cork at this level. While the margin was big it did not reflect the effort put in by the players some of who were helping out to ensure the numbers were there. On Thursday evening the minor footballers played a very under strength O’Donovan Rossa team in a game that never rose above 1^st gear.

There was good news for club members during the week. Pat Burke, Maultrahane and recent past chairman was the 1^st prize winner of the Cork GAA Club Draw for the month of June.

Martin Collins(Kilmacabea), Diarmaid O’Callaghan(Maultrahane) and Kevin Whooley(Shreelane) were part of the Cork U16football team that won the Munster championship. Cork beat Kerry South in the final in Limerick on Sunday. Martin had the added honour of captaining the team. Kevin O’Driscoll(Shreelane) is a mentor with the team.

Organisations and groups within the parish are encouraged to get their thinking caps on and prepare items for the Rag parade in Leap on Sunday 5^th August as part of the community festival.
