Kilmacabea Notes 4/9/12

The U14 footballers replayed the West Cork final against Ilen Rovers in Castlehaven, on Saturday September 1st. Conditions were tough with rain falling. Ilen started strong and while the Kilmacs got a goal from the penalty spot, Ilen were on top for the first half and value for their lead. 0-7 to 1- 0. After half time the team put in a super effort to turn the game and holding Ilen scoreless for the third quarter were now in a better position Unfortunately the concession of a goal after 17 minutes could have been fatal but they battled back and had reduced the deficit to two points with minutes to go. Another goal for Ilen was the killer. The team though beaten showed fantastic spirit and never surrendered right to the end even when they were dealt shattering blows and can hold their heads high. Well done to all. The loss of a key player prior to the game had a big bearing on things especially with numbers being tight.

The club would like to thank all who generously supported the flag day in Skibbereen for the underage club on Friday 31st August. Thanks to all who gave of their time to collect.

Match Report
U14B Rebel Og Thiar Football Final Replay Match Report 1/9/12
Ilen Rovers 2-9 Kilmacabea 2-2
Ilen Rovers U14 footballers powered their way to victory over Kilmacabea in the Rebel Og Thiar Final Replay in Castlehaven on Saturday 1st September. These two teams met for a second time, in very difficult conditions, with a continuous heavy drizzle and some wind. Neither of these impacted on the games as both sides gave a whole hearted effort from start to finish, giving the supporters more than enough excitement. Ilen Rovers found their balance quicker and opened the scoring with a point from Sean Minihane in the fifth minute and this was followed by a point from Hughie O’Neill in the sixth minute. Kilmacabea opened their scoring with a goal from a well taken penalty by Dan Lynch in the 10th minute. Both sides were giving their all and scores were at a premium. Three further points from Ilen at the end of the 1st quarter reflected their control of possession. Finishing off the half with two further points put them ahead with the half time score, Ilen Rovers 0-7 Kilmacabea 1-0. The second half continued as intensive as ever. Both sides were playing good football and creating chances, but with defences giving everything scores were not coming. Kilmacabea were trying everything to turn the game and with a point from Damien Gore in the 9th minute it looked as if they could claw it back if they got a goal. The goal, when it came, went to Ilen Rovers in the 17th minute. This was a key score in the game after a fine move the length of the pitch and it was fitting that it was finished off by Sean Minihane, who had been involved in the move earlier and had an outstanding game throughout. While this put Ilen Rovers in a very strong position the Kilmacs responded and were now getting on top. With another point  from Damien Gore and a goal from another well taken penalty by Dan Lynch in the 21st and 23rd minutes the Kilmac’s had cut the lead to two points  and the game was anyone’s. With the Kilmacs attacking, Ilen Rovers created another fine passing movement  involving Eoin O’Driscoll, Peter O’Driscoll, Sean Minihane, Joseph Hickey, Sacha Hodnett and this was put into the net by  Joseph Hickey in the 27th minute and this finally killed off the Kilmacabea challenge. Two further points gave Ilen Rovers victory on the score  2-9 to 2-2. As well as those mentioned previously  who were key performers for Ilen Rovers, there were also good displays by Ryan Herlihy in goal, Emmet Hourihane and Aaron O’Sullivan in defence and Liam Dearle, but all players played their part. Kilmacabea had good performers in Caelan O’Mahony, Damien Gore, Dan Lynch, Ross Cantwell,  Jamie O’Donoghue  and  Ciarán French. The cup was presented to the winning captain, Emmet Hourihane, by Noel Coakley of the Rebel Og Board to great celebrations from the large Ilen support.
