Club Notes 17/12/12

With the shadows falling on the playing fields for another year, it is time to reflect on the year just passed and make plans for the new playing year of 2013. Foundations are being laid for the latter already: next years’ Under-21 and Junior panels have commenced winter training. As for the former, medals hard-won on the field of play are due reward for some great displays, and are a tangible reminder of how success can be attained through hard work, dedication and teamwork.

Our annual quiz will be held on Thursday December 27th in the Leap Inn at 8.30 p.m. On the night medals won by our championship-winning Junior C panel will be presented, and presentations to Player of the Year and Club Person of the Year will also be made. All are welcome and a great night is assured.

The club has recently joined Facebook and Twitter. Our Facebook address is www.facebook.com/KilmacabeaGaaClub (please ‘like’ us!) and our Twitter address is https://twitter.com/KilmacabeaGAA (please ‘follow’ us), or contact us directly @KilmacabeaGAA
The latter account is particularly useful for those wishing to keep up-to-date with match scores and news, so it is worth following.

The club would like to wish all our players, mentors, officers and supporters a very Happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Notes 26/11/12

The minor footballers played Beal Atha’n Ghaorthaidh in the final of the league on Saturday 17th November in Dunmanway. On a dry day the conditions were good.  While the team hadn’t played in a long time and preparations were patchy the team settled well and were on top from the start. With goals from Richie O’Sullivan and Declan O’Sullivan the team was dominant throughout the pitch and were well worth the half time lead of 2-6 to 1-0. The second half was the complete reverse.
Beal Atha’n Ghaorthaidh began to get on top around the middle and started to close the gap. By the 18th minute the gap was down to 2 points and looking dangerous
The team managed to keep battling and were able to hold out for victory on the score of Kilmacabea 2-7. Beal Atha’n Ghaorthaidh 1-9. While it was hard won it was welcome and well done to all involved including mentors William Williamson, Kevin O’Driscoll, Martin O’Sullivan and Tom Hayes. Team Matthew O’Neill, Denny Hayes, Shane McDermott, Kieran O’Sullivan, Seamus Murphy, Liam Thompson, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Martin Collins, Euan Tobin, Eamon O’Sullivan, Declan O’Sullivan 1 -2, Oisin O’Sullivan 0-1(Captain), Kevin Whooley 0-1, Richie O’Sullivan 1-3, David O’Donovan, Alex Nowotynski, Niall Hayes, Kevin O’Donovan, Aidan Williamson, Gavin Daly, Paudie Cronin, Odhran Connolly.

Kilmacabea Notes 16/10/12

Sport is full of highs and lows and after some recent lows last weekend had a number of highs. On Friday 12th a very enjoyable function took place in the Celtic Ross Hotel for the September Sport star of the month awards with a strong Leap representation. The junior sports star award was presented to Martin Collins, Kilmacabea for his achievements in sport to date and especially with the Cork under 16 footballers and hurlers recently. The senior sport star award was presented to Ruthann Sheahan, The Leap Inn, for her incredible achievement in the world ultra marathon championship in Poland. It was good to recognise their  achievements. On Saturday evening in Aughaville it got even better when the second adult team played St Colums in the final of the Junior C championship. The team went behind early on but once they settled they were never headed again. This was a fine game from two committed and well matched teams and the game was always finely balanced. The Kilmacs had the slight advantage during the first half and were dangerous going forward. At half time the score was Kilmacabea 0-4, St Colums 0-3. The Kilmacs pushed on at the start of the second half to extend the gap to 3 points. Back came Colums and had their period on top and by the twenty third minute the gap was down to 1 point and the game could go either way. The break with a point finished off by team captain Barry Glavin in the 26th minute. This was the turning point and the Kilmacs went on to win on the score 0-9 to 0-6.  This was a welcome reward for a group who had a slow start to the season but with the stewardship and drive of Noel Crowley a fine crew was gathered. This was a team performance with every player giving his all and their commitment to each other showed in the way everyone worked for the cause both in defence and attack. There was also a solid core of experience in the ranks. Well done to all and especially to mentors Noel Crowley, Denis O’Driscoll and Kevin O’Driscoll. Team ;  David O Donovan;  Eoin Daly, Brendan O Driscoll ,Brian Hayes; Tim O Mahony, Ruarai Hourihane; Thomas Jennings; James O Donovan, Noel O Donoghue; Oisin O Sullivan, Colin McCarthy 0-4(0-3free), Paul Tobin; Noel Crowley 0-1, Barry Glavin (Captain)0-3, Andrew O Callaghan 0-1. Subs :  Aidan Glavin, Niall Hayes, Padraig Burke, Denis Hayes, Tommy Hayes, Brian O Donovan, Sean O Driscoll, Kevin O Donovan, Jonathan Hill, Eamon O Sullivan, Padraig Houghney. Unavailable on the night but had played their part along the way were Coleman O’Riordan and Sean O’Regan.

Notes 9/10/12

Adrigole made their long trip to Leap worthwhile when they played in the Autumn U12football league on Sunday, October 6th. With a bit more drive they had the edge on the home team. The locals took awhile to settle but showed they had ability of their own also when they found their rhythm.

The first prize winner in the October club draw was Kevin O’Sullivan, Reavilleen, second went to Deniese and Diarmaid French, Knockaneacrohy, and third to Mike and Anne McCarthy, Reavouler. Consolation prizes were won by Ted O’Donovan, Kilmacabea, The Milner Family, Bandon, William Williamson, Killenleigh and James Nyhan, Gortroe. This was the final draw for 2012. Notes 25/9/12

The U16 footballers were in championship action on Sunday 23rd when they played Kilmeen in the semi-final in Rosscarbery. This was a good game of football with little between the sides. The Kilmacs while having enough possession were never able to convert enough scores and unfortunately lost out in the end 2- 12 to 2-10. While it was disappointing for those involved there is enough ability in the group to progress in the future with the right application.

The U12 hurlers played Ilen Rovers on Thursday 20th in Leap. After a game between two evenly matched sides victory went to the visitors.

The U10footballers played in the monster blitz held in Clonakilty on Saturday to further their development.

The Rebel Og/Mercy Foundation Fun walk is to take place on this Saturday 29th September at 4.30pm and will be around Leap village. Funds raised will be shared between the underage club and the Mercy hospital. Everyone is asked to assemble at the GAA grounds at 4.30pm

Kilmacabea GAA club had the historic honour of hosting the Carbery Junior A football final for the first time when Tadgh MacCarthaigh and St Oliver Plunketts played an exciting game on Saturday 15th . Victory went to the men from the West after extra time. It’s becoming a bit of a tradition for big games to go to extra time when hosted in Leap. Thanks to all who helped out with the preparation of the ground, the organisation in the lead up, stewarding, traffic, parking, catering and all the other things that need to be done to ensure an event such as this runs off smoothly. Kilmacabea Notes 4/9/12

The U14 footballers replayed the West Cork final against Ilen Rovers in Castlehaven, on Saturday September 1st. Conditions were tough with rain falling. Ilen started strong and while the Kilmacs got a goal from the penalty spot, Ilen were on top for the first half and value for their lead. 0-7 to 1- 0. After half time the team put in a super effort to turn the game and holding Ilen scoreless for the third quarter were now in a better position Unfortunately the concession of a goal after 17 minutes could have been fatal but they battled back and had reduced the deficit to two points with minutes to go. Another goal for Ilen was the killer. The team though beaten showed fantastic spirit and never surrendered right to the end even when they were dealt shattering blows and can hold their heads high. Well done to all. The loss of a key player prior to the game had a big bearing on things especially with numbers being tight.

The club would like to thank all who generously supported the flag day in Skibbereen for the underage club on Friday 31st August. Thanks to all who gave of their time to collect.

Martin Collins(Kilmacabea) played well with the Cork U16 hurlers in the All Ireland Fe 16 hurling competition in Nenagh on Saturday beating Kilkenny and Wexford before losing to a strong Limerick team by one point in the semi-final.

Match Report
U14B Rebel Og Thiar Football Final Replay Match Report 1/9/12
Ilen Rovers 2-9 Kilmacabea 2-2
Ilen Rovers U14 footballers powered their way to victory over Kilmacabea in the Rebel Og Thiar Final Replay in Castlehaven on Saturday 1st September. These two teams met for a second time, in very difficult conditions, with a continuous heavy drizzle and some wind. Neither of these impacted on the games as both sides gave a whole hearted effort from start to finish, giving the supporters more than enough excitement. Ilen Rovers found their balance quicker and opened the scoring with a point from Sean Minihane in the fifth minute and this was followed by a point from Hughie O’Neill in the sixth minute. Kilmacabea opened their scoring with a goal from a well taken penalty by Dan Lynch in the 10th minute. Both sides were giving their all and scores were at a premium. Three further points from Ilen at the end of the 1st quarter reflected their control of possession. Finishing off the half with two further points put them ahead with the half time score, Ilen Rovers 0-7 Kilmacabea 1-0. The second half continued as intensive as ever. Both sides were playing good football and creating chances, but with defences giving everything scores were not coming. Kilmacabea were trying everything to turn the game and with a point from Damien Gore in the 9th minute it looked as if they could claw it back if they got a goal. The goal, when it came, went to Ilen Rovers in the 17th minute. This was a key score in the game after a fine move the length of the pitch and it was fitting that it was finished off by Sean Minihane, who had been involved in the move earlier and had an outstanding game throughout. While this put Ilen Rovers in a very strong position the Kilmacs responded and were now getting on top. With another point  from Damien Gore and a goal from another well taken penalty by Dan Lynch in the 21st and 23rd minutes the Kilmac’s had cut the lead to two points  and the game was anyone’s. With the Kilmacs attacking, Ilen Rovers created another fine passing movement  involving Eoin O’Driscoll, Peter O’Driscoll, Sean Minihane, Joseph Hickey, Sacha Hodnett and this was put into the net by  Joseph Hickey in the 27th minute and this finally killed off the Kilmacabea challenge. Two further points gave Ilen Rovers victory on the score  2-9 to 2-2. As well as those mentioned previously  who were key performers for Ilen Rovers, there were also good displays by Ryan Herlihy in goal, Emmet Hourihane and Aaron O’Sullivan in defence and Liam Dearle, but all players played their part. Kilmacabea had good performers in Caelan O’Mahony, Damien Gore, Dan Lynch, Ross Cantwell,  Jamie O’Donoghue  and  Ciarán French. The cup was presented to the winning captain, Emmet Hourihane, by Noel Coakley of the Rebel Og Board to great celebrations from the large Ilen support. Teams Ilen Rovers : Ryan Herlihy; Darragh Sheehy, Emmet Hourihane, Aaron O’Sullivan; Jack Collins, Eoin O’Driscoll, Peter O’Driscoll 0-1; Sean Minihane 1-2, Liam Dearle 0-1; Aidan Walsh, Ciarán Connolly 0-2, Hughie O’Neill 0-2; Sacha Hodnett, Joseph Hickey 1-1, Jack Harding; Ronan Collins, Michael Keohane, Martin O’Mealoid, Mathew Bushe, Dermot Hegarty, James Davis. Kilmacabea: J.P. Sheehan; Odhran Kerrisk, Ciarán French, Caelan O’Mahony; Jamie O’Donoghue, Tiernan Kerrisk, Adrian Gore; Sean French, Damien Gore 0-2; Ian Jennings, Ross Cantwell, Dan Lynch 2-0; Ashley Deane, Myles Tobin, Ellis Wilson; Oisín O’Driscoll, Conor Nash, Christy Wilson, Darren Whooley, Karl Ronan, Dara Tobin.

Notes 28/8/12

The U14 footballers played the West Cork final against Ilen Rovers in Castlehaven, last Friday, August 24th. The Kilmacs played the first half against the wind and the evening sun and it looked initially if the stronger Ilen had the advantages. The Kilmacs settled and with economic use of possession kicked some good scores to establish a lead. With the defence working well the team was in a good position coming up to half time 6 points ahead. The concession of two points at the end of the half left the score at Kilmacabea 0-6 Ilen Rovers 0-2. As expected Ilen made changes and came strong for the second half and the Kilmacs were struggling for possession. When Ilen Rovers goaled in the 8th minute and followed up quickly with two points to go ahead it looked as if the game had turned. The following 10 minutes were exciting with both sides giving their all but neither scoring. When Ilen extended their lead in the twenty second minute it could be expected they would push on. Credit to the young Kilmacs as they lifted themselves and scored 2 points to level the game and take it to a replay. This was what underage football is all about, with both sides giving their all and little to separate them. Team John Patrick Sheehan; Odhran Kerrisk, Ciaran French, Caelan O’Mahony; Jamie O’Donoghue, TiernanKerrisk, Adrian Gore; Sean French, Damien Gore; Ian Jennings, Ross Cantwell, Dan Lynch; Oisin O’Driscoll, Myles Tobin, Ellis Wilson. Conor Nash, Christy Wilson, Darren Whooley, Karl Ronan, Dara Tobin, Ashley Deane.

Congratulations to Joseph O’Callaghan and Kieran O’Sullivan who were part of the Kilmacabea U21 crew that won a gold medal at the All Ireland coastal rowing finals held in Courtmacsherry on Sunday 26th August.

Notes 14/8/12

The U14 footballers were in championship action on Thursday 9th June when they played Barryroe in the semi-final in Clonakilty. This game was never a contest and the game was decided very early with the Kilmac's being victorious in a game that was not good preparation for a final.
The final of this competition vs. Ilen Rovers is fixed for Castlehaven on Friday 24th August at 7pm.

The U16hurlers played St James on Monday night in Ardfield. Being short on numbers meant the game couldn’t be won despite the efforts of those who made the effort to turn up.

The first round of the U16 football championship has been put back to allow the completion of other competitions.

Notes 8/8/12

The junior C footballers took on Bantry in the championship in Leap on Friday 6th August. It had been thought that there may be difficulties in fielding but with a good turn out from all it turned out to be a very solid display and the team goes forward to the next round after winning on the score 2-10 to 0-9 after a good display.

The U16  footballers played Clanna Gael in the league and after a match where they had to work hard came out on top.

Eileen Connolly, Corran won first prize in the latest monthly club draw. Second went to Ger O Sullivan, Dromillihy and third to James Nyhan, Gortroe. Consolation prize winners were Kay and Josie Ronan, Clounties; Joe O Donovan, Bawnfune; Margaret Crowley, Leap and James Crowley, Cappanaboha.

The revived Community Festival took place over the weekend and was a great success. The hard working committee  had organised a wide range of activities and would like to thank all who participated and supported. It was welcome to see people give their time to get involved in the various events. The energy and imagination displayed in the festival rag parade on Sunday evening was a revelation and great to see. For some it bought back happy memories of festivals past and for others it will have created new memories that will hopefully be built on in years to come. Well done to all. It was a great community get together and is welcome, in these difficult times, to lift people’s spirits.

On Wednesday 18th July the minor hurlers played St Colms in the championship in Skibbereen.  The team was slow to settle and the western men were much livelier playing with the wind and were in a strong position at half time ahead on the score 3-8 to 1-4. While the game may have appeared out of reach the team put in a great effort and worked very hard for the second half. While they dominated possession they were unable to convert this possession into scores and while the final score showed them losing 1-6 to 4-8 they had restored a lot of pride with their effort.
On Friday evening the minor footballers played Clanna Gael in a competitive game that was a good preparation for the championship which will have been played by the time these notes are printed.
The U8 footballers took part in an excellently organised blitz in Dunmanway on Saturday 21st July. The conditions were superb and this was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all involved and was a credit to the organisers.

Preparations are ongoing for the festival which will run from 1st -6th August

News 17/7/12

On Tuesday 10th July the U16 hurlers played Bantry in the championship  in Skibbereen.  The players put in a great effort and worked very hard. Unfortunately they were up against a team whose skill and touch was excellent. There was ability throughout the Bantry  team and as hard as the Kilmacs tried they were never going to be able to match this fine Bantry team, who would be far ahead of anything in West Cork at this level. While the margin was big it did not reflect the effort put in by the players some of who were helping out to ensure the numbers were there. On Thursday evening the minor footballers played a very under strength O’Donovan Rossa team in a game that never rose above 1st gear.

There was good news for club members during the week. Pat Burke, Maultrahane and recent past chairman was the 1st prize winner of the Cork GAA Club Draw for the month of June.

Martin Collins(Kilmacabea), Diarmaid O’Callaghan(Maultrahane) and Kevin Whooley(Shreelane) were part of the Cork U16football team that won the Munster championship. Cork beat Kerry South in the final in Limerick on Sunday. Martin had the added honour of captaining the team. Kevin O’Driscoll(Shreelane) is a mentor with the team.
Congratulations to all.

Organisations and groups within the parish are encouraged to get their thinking caps on and prepare items for the Rag parade in Leap on Sunday 5th August as part of the community festival.

Kilmacabea Gaa Notes 9/7/12

A number of games were played at various levels during the week but there wasn’t much joy in the results. On Thursday 5th St Colms were the visitors to Leap and as has been the case a number of times during the year the home side lost out by the slimmest of margins on the score Kilmacabea 2- 11 St.Colms 1-15. On the same night the minor hurlers played Carbery Rangers in the league in Rosscarbery.  A good effort was put in but a stronger home team and with some good hurlers gave the Ross men a comprehensive victory. Liam Thompson suffered an arm injury which is hoped may not be as bad as feared. Tadgh McCarthaigh were the visitors to Leap on Saturday morning for the U12 football league but again the visitors were too strong for the home team. On Saturday evening the U14 footballers played Bantry in a challenge match but the Bantry team were a much stronger outfit and had a comprehensive win. A week to forget !. The show goes on.

Kilmacabea GAA notes 26/6/12

Kilmacabea Notes 30/6/12
The junior A football team was in action on Saturday night when they took on neighbours Castlehaven in Skibbereen. On a very wet night it certainly didn’t feel like Summer. The team started positively and got a great boost when Sam O’Driscoll finished a good move to the net in the 6th minute. Unfortunately this lead was not protected and the concession of goals in the 8th and 14th minute were extremely damaging to the positive start. Things got worse in the 19th minute when the team was reduced to 14 with an unnecessary red card. The team battled on and went in at half time behind on the score of 2-4 to 1-4. The team tried hard for the second half but were always struggling to pick up loose ball and were putting themselves under pressure allowing Castlehaven to pick off scores to extend the lead. Things didn’t work out and the final score was Castlehaven 2-10, Kilmacabea 2- 5. A disappointing outcome for the effort put in by everyone.

There was a better outcome for the U14 footballers, that took on Kilbrittain in the championship in Ballinascarthy on Thursday night 21st June. When these teams played in the league early in the season the Kilmacs lost heavily but they didn’t show any signs of those memories in how they went about this game. This was a team performance with each and everyone giving their all and there were outstanding performances throughout the field. The team played against the hill in the first half but using the ball effectively they were full value for their lead at half time. They started the second half in a similar fashion and continued to maintain their advantage. The greater strength of the Kilbrittain players began to show in the last 15minutes as the Kilmacs tired and Kilbrittain then got a grip. The Kilmacs held out and were deserving winners on the score of 2-12 to 2-5. This was a good example of what can be done with the application of the players, intelligent play combined with some luck and was a pleasant turn around.  Team John Patrick Sheehan, Odhran Kerrisk, Jamie O’Donoghue, Adrian Gore, Ross Cantwell, Sean French, Ciaran French, Tiernan Kerrisk(0-1), Darren Whooley, Ian Jennings(0-3), Caelan O’Mahony(0-1), Damien Gore(0-5), Oisin O’Driscoll(0-1), Dan Lynch(2-0), Myles Tobin(0-1), Karl Ronan, Conor Nash,  Ashley Deane, Jamie Ronan, Christy Wilson, Ellis Wilson.

The U10’s put in a good effort in their football game against a strong Kilmeen team on Wednesday 20th June.
The U12 hurlers had a good run out in their game against Skibbereen on Saturday 23rd.

The club would like to express condolences to the family of William(Bill) Deane, Lahana, Drimoleague and Acres, Leap who was laid to rest during the week.

Notes 19/6/12

The U14 hurlers were in championship action in Rosscarbery on Saturday 16th June. Their opponents were St. James a team they have met a few times in recent years. The team put in a good effort and were doing better than anticipated when unfortunately the concession of a goal right on half time was to prove their undoing. The half time score was Kilmacabea 0-5 St. James 1-6. Starting slowly for the second half meant that Ardfield were able to pick off scores to extend their lead and the effort was taking its toll. To their credit they never gave in and came strongly at the end but the gap was too much. It was a good effort that players could feel satisfied with. Team Odhran Kerrisk, Jamie O’Donoghue, Christy Wilson, Ross Cantwell, Caelan O’Mahony, Tiernan Kerrisk, Darren Whooley, Ian Jennings, Ashley Deane, Myles Tobin, Sean French, Ciaran French, Karl Ronan, Conor Nash, Oisin O’Driscoll, Jamie Ronan. This team was in action again the following morning when they travelled to play Ilen Rovers in the league in Rath. With some players missing and a lot of tired and bruised bodies it was a much weakened team that took to the field. Even though they were well beaten on the score line they again gave full value and tried their best. For some of the younger players they were taking on opponents almost twice their size.
There were some very enjoyable games played by the U8/6’s when Carbery Rangers were the visitors on Saturday morning. There mightn’t have been much order and some lapses in concentration but there was great enthusiasm both by the players and their parents.

Timmie O Mahony doing a great job getting them organised.

A number of girls from the parish were part of the Rosscarbery Ladies U14 football team that won the County final on Saturday when they beat Dromtarriff. They include Ashling O’Callaghan, Julieanne Williamson, Amy O’Donovan, Rachel O’Driscoll, Michelle O’Driscoll, Shannon Ronan, Aoife Crowley, Louise O’Regan, Grace O’Sullivan, Kate Beamish.

The big match this week is the Junior A Football Championship vs. Castlehaven in Skibbereen on Saturday 23rd June at 6.15pm. Support would be most welcome.

Notes 29/5/12

The U10 group put in a very satisfactory performance when they travelled to Diarmaid O’Mathuna on Wednesday evening.
The junior footballers travelled to play Clanna Gael . In a game where there was little between the sides they ended up on the wrong side of a one point margin a scenario that has happened a few times this season.
Final score Kilmacabea  0-8 Clanna Gael 0-9

The U14hurlers played Ilen Rovers on Thursday 24th May in Leap. The team put in a good battling performance but had to give way to the stronger team. Ellis Wilson picked up an unfortunate injury and the club wish him a speedy recovery.

The U12 hurlers travelled to St Colums on Saturday. With limited numbers and experience they were up against it and playing against the gale force wind in the first half made their task impossible.
The minor hurlers picked up a missed fixture when they played O Donovan Rossa in Leap on Monday evening. This was a good competitive game between two evenly matched teams and was a good test for the team. After a good hours hurling the team was glad to fashion a victory. The final score was Kilmacabea 3-13 O Donovan Rossa 2 - 12.

During the week the pitch was sanded to continue the maintenance of the surface condition.

Notes 21/5/12

The U10 footballers had a very enjoyable game against Argideen Rangers in Leap on Thursday 17th. This was  a good test for them and an opportunity to experience the team game.

The U14 footballers took on a understrength Ballinascarthy side on Sunday morning in Ballinascarthy and with a good attacking performance they were well in control of the game.
