Fixture U16 hurling league final vs. Mizen Og in Goleen on Sunday 4th December at 11am. Match cancelled.

The U16 footballers played Clanna Gael in the final of the league on Sunday 27th November in the Marsh Skibbereen. After the very heavy rain in the days leading up to it the pitch was in as good a shape as could be expected with a little water on the surface. Playing with the benefit of the strong wind the Kilmacs settled quickly. With Gavin Daly repeating his effort of the previous week with an early goal the Kilmacs were on top. With goals also from Richie O’Sullivan and Euan Tobin they were in a strong position at half time ahead 3- 8 to 0 – 2. Clanna Gael had a bigger input in the second half as would be expected and while they created opportunities of their own the gap was too big to close. A few knocks also disrupted the flow of the game but the Kilmacs had enough in reserve and won the game 3 – 9 to 1 – 5.The trophy was accepted by Richie O’Sullivan, captain. Well done to all the players for their efforts over a long season and their mentors Kevin O’Driscoll, William Williamson , Martin O’Sullivan and Tom Hayes.
Panel - Matthew O’Neill, Odhran Connolly, Declan O’Sullivan, Shane O’Neill, Daniel O’Sullivan, Niall Hayes, Aidan Williamson, Martin Collins, Euan Tobin, Shane McDermott, Kevin Whooley, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Darren Whooley, Richie O’Sullivan(Captain), Gavin Daly, Ruairi O’Mahony, Kevin O’Donovan, Issac O’Shea, Dan Lynch, Ciarán French.

Kate O’Donovan(Clounkeen) represented the club in the Scor Na Og competition and was successful going forward to the next stage. Aishling O’Callaghan(Maultrahane), Eoin O’Sullivan(Mealisheen) and Darren Whooley(Droum) came 3rd in the Quiz. Well done to all.

The U16 footballers played Kilmeen in the semi final of the league in Rossmore on Sunday morning the 20th November. With the opposition having won the championship it was expected to be a tough test. The conditions were difficult after the heavy rain in the days preceding. The Kilmacs got off to an ideal start when Gavin Daly was able to finish to the net in the first minute. Kilmeen responded but the Kilmac team was playing with a good balance and settled into the game and were worth the half time lead of 1 –7 to 0-2. Kilmeen did start the second half with a goal but the Kilmacs closed the game out and were always in control to finish on the score 2-15 to 2-3. This was a good team performance and was a welcome return and was hugely important after events in recent times.

Several of the players were off to the Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork after that to receive medals from Conor Counihan, Cork Senior football manager for being part of successful Cork County underage football teams in 2011. Niall Hayes and Richie O’Sullivan were part of the U16 team. Martin Collins, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Euan Tobin and Kevin Whooley were part of the U15 team.

Result U15 football championship semi final vs Sam Maguires in Clonakilty on Tuesday 8th November at 7.30pm.
Loss Sam Maguires 3 - 10 Kilmacabea 1 - 8

Despite the dismal weather conditions last Sunday  morning, 30th October 2011,in Clonakilty Bandon and Kilmacabea served up an entertaining game of football in the Junior A Football league final. John O Driscoll despite carrying an injury struck for a well taken goal early in the second quarter to give Kilmacs a 1 – 2 to 0 – 1 lead. However three unanswered points by Bandon had the margin cut to the minimum by half time. Kilmacabea only added two points in the second half, but some good defending and some squandered chances by the opposition had them still leading with time running out.  However like in the first half Bandon finished the stronger and had edged in front by the end of normal time and added two more points in injury time to copper fasten the football double. Having been out of the championship since early July Kilmacs can take some satisfaction from a creditable performance at the close of the season. Final score Kilmacabea 1-4 Bandon 0-10

Latest News 10/10/11

After the recent traumatic events it was time to try to move on this past week. The U16 footballers played the championship semi-final against Ilen Og on Wednesday 5th in Castlehaven. While everyone put in a good effort it was a night when individually and collectively few were at their best and victory went to the better team on the score 2-7 to 0-8. Good luck to Ilen in the final.
On  Saturday afternoon Kilmacabea junior footballers got a late season morale boost when they overcame Gabriel Rangers in the league semi-final in Ballydehob. An early goal by Joe Collins gave Kilmacs a bit of a cushion. Gabriels were picking off the points with the aid of the breeze in the second quarter when Ger O Donovan again found the net for Kilmacs to leave the half time score 2 - 3 to 0 - 6. In the second half against the breeze Gabriels continued the pressure but Ger got inside the defence to notch another Kilmac goal. Gabriels never gave up but Kilmacs held out for 3 - 5 to 0 - 10 victory. They now face Bandon who will be going for the championship/league double in the final.
The U13 footballers played Pedlars Cross in the league final on Sunday morning in Rossmore. There was a very strong wind in Kilmacs favour for the first half. The young Kilmacs were playing well but while they had a slight advantage at half time on the score of 0-5 to 0-2 it didn’t look nearly enough especially as Pedlars had created chances of their own. The Kilmacs scored a goal at the start of the second half but as this was cancelled out by Pedlars with a goal of their own immediately it looked as if the struggle would be too much. With a few positional switches, amazingly the Kilmacs settled to the task and playing with good controlled use of possession, went on to play better against the wind. With every one playing their part they were able to show their ability and while the margin was tight in the end they were deserving of their victory on the score of 1-8 to 1-7. This was a welcome return for a group who have persevered even when results haven’t always gone their way and with fine individual performances it was the team effort that fashioned the win. Well done to the mentors Bart Kerrisk, Michael Gore and Sean Tobin for the work put in over the year. John Patrick Sheehan made a number of key saves especially during the first half and was very dependable throughout. Tiernan Kerrisk was outstanding in defence especially in the second half when he took over the centre back role. Ellis Wilson showed all his football awareness both defensively and in attack. Sean French won a huge amount of possession and was unbeatable all through. Ross Cantwell had one of his best ever days showing all his natural ability to win possession and use it positively. Jamie O Donoughue was strong all through and always had the advantage on his opposite number. Darren Whooley though upagainst a much bigger opponent didn't let it bother him and won a huge amount of possession and was always at the heart of things. Dan Lynch had an outstanding game, winning abundant possession, moving and linking effectively and able to finish with fine scores for a man of the match performance. Damian Gore as always was at the heart of the attack, working tirelessly, linking with others and finishing deadly. Myles Tobin won a lot of possession and linked well with the rest of the attack for his best game of the season. Ciaran French worked hard in attack in the first half but it was when he reverted to wing back that he really came into his own with his ability to read the game, win possession and use it. Caelan O'Mahony worked hard in attack even if it didn't always work out and the delivery didn't benefit his game. Ian Jennings put in a huge effort all over the place and showed great promise throughout. Adrian Gore and Karl Ronan came on and played their part.  Team: John Patrick Sheehan, Tiernan Kerrisk, Ross Cantwell, Sean French, Jamie O’Donoghue, Dan Lynch(1-2), Darren Whooley(0-2), Myles Tobin, Damian Gore(0-4), Ciarán French, Caelan O’Mahony, Ian Jennings, Karl Ronan, Ashley Deane, Conor Nash, Adrian Gore.
On Sunday afternoon it was off to Skibbereen to play the minor hurling league final against the home team. This was a game that was played in very difficult conditions. The Kilmacs had the advantage of the strong wind and were making the early running. The loss of Declan O’Sullivan with a painful finger injury midway through the half disrupted the flow and a soft goal was conceded soon after to level the game. The Kilmacs responded with a goal of their own but the lead at half time of 1-6 to 1-2 did not look enough in the conditions. Again the team individually and collectively responded and with some tremendous displays all over the pitch, were able to respond to the challenge and even extend the advantage. Some late Skibbereen scores made for a nervous final few minutes but the team was not giving in and were worthy winners on the score 1- 9 to 2 – 4. This was a tremendous show of spirit and heart by this group and showed their enthusiasm for the game. When these teams met in the first round of the league Kilmacabea had to borrow two players from their opponents to play the game. Team Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Martin Collins, Liam Thompson, Euan Tobin, Niall Hayes, Finnán Tobin, Liam Cahalane, Kevin Whooley, Eamon O’Sullivan(0-5), Declan O’Sullivan(0-1), Kevin Hayes, Richie O’Sullivan(1-3), Shane McDermott, Liam O’Driscoll, Kevin O’Donovan, Denny Hayes, Aidan Williamson.
The week shows the benefits of sport and the way it can lift people’s spirits and bring pleasure and enjoyment.
Martina French, Knockanenacrohy won the first prize in this month's club draw. Karl McCarthy, Glandore won the second prize and third went Jonathan Hill, Clonkeen House. Consolation prizes were won by Norma Whelton, Clounties; Michael Glavin, Dromillihy; Christy and Anne McCarthy, Maulmoreen and Adrian O Driscoll, Kilmacsimon. That completes the current series of draws. Tickets are now on sale for the coming twelve months. The prize fund will again be €1,000 per month and tickets €10 per month

County Champions
Sunday 25th October 2011, was another historic day in the clubs history when Kilmacabea played Churchtown in the County final of the Rebel Og Minor Hurling championship in Macroom. On a fine day and the ground in good condition there was a sense of déjà vu as Churchtown’s colors were also green and gold and their sponsor was also an O’Brien. For those that came late there was some confusion as to which was their side to support.  Churchtown started powerfully and showing good touches and with a strong wind at their backs, looked to have all the options and before the Kilmacs got their bearings, they were a goal and a point down and it looked as if the day was over before it had begun. Slowly they got to grips and while Churchtown were still creating chances the Kilmacs were beginning to raise their game. It looked as if the breakthrough came in the 7th minute when Liam O’Driscoll goaled but unfortunately it was disallowed for a square infringement. The Kilmac defence with some superb performances were now more settled and this provided the platform to set up their own attacks and while the first point didn’t come until the 10th minute the game was now end to end. When Richie O’Sullivan goaled in the 17th minute the Kilmacs now had a 1point lead and the Kilmacs were showing well and went in ahead at half time on the score Kilmacabea 1-6 Churchtown 1-4. As happens the wind was gone for the second half but some positional switches seemed to have an effect for the Kilmacs, as a 5point gap was opened by the 8th minute when Kevin Hayes goaled. Churchtown were not going to give in easily and it was now their turn. By the 14th minute the game was again level and Churchtown were playing with more fluency and potency and looked capable of taking control. Some more switches from the Kilmacs tipped the balance back and with 3 crucial points managed to edge ahead again by the 22nd minute with both sides giving it everything. The crucial score came in the 23rd minute when Richie O’Sullivan took on the defence to goal. This was the spark and with effective substitutions the game was now in the control of the Kilmacs and showing great fitness they finished powerfully. The final score of 3-14 to 2-7 was a little flattering compared to the closeness that had gone before, in a game that was hugely entertaining, with good skill and played in a fair manner.  Referee Eamon Sheehy and his officials did a good job all through. The cup was presented to captain Finnán Tobin by Denis Keohane, Oifigeach Oiliúna, Cork County Board who has been of assistance in the development of hurling in the club. Well done to the mentors Derry O’Callaghan, TJ Collins, Tom Hayes and Michael Tobin who have worked with them all year and also to the mentors on the football side who have cooperated. This is the clubs first county hurling title and is a welcome return for the efforts of a small band such as John Collins, John Walsh, John Burke who have worked with these players down thro the years, a lot of the time, against the odds trying to keep players interested and involved. At the start of the year when only ten players turned up for the first few games this result was a long way away but the players responded to the call and it was their attitude that earned this result. It has been shown in all the games, the spirit that was within the group and in how they played for the team and for each other. Team - Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Martin Collins(0-1), Liam Thompson, Finnán Tobin, Niall Hayes, Euan Tobin, Liam Cahalane(0-1), Liam O’Driscoll, Eamon O’Sullivan(0-6), Kevin Hayes(1-0), Richie O’Sullivan(2-3), Declan O’Sullivan((0-2), Kevin Whooley(0-1), Shane McDermott, Oisin O’Sullivan, Odhran Connolly, Kevin O’Donovan, Denny Hayes, Aidan Williamson.

Back Euan Tobin, Declan O'Sullivan, Liam Thomson, Martin Collins, Denny Hayes, Liam Cahalane, Finnán Tobin, Kevin Hayes, Liam O'Driscoll, Shane McDermott, Odhran Connolly.
Front Kevin O'Donovan, Eamon O'Sullivan, Oisin O'Sullivan, Diarmaid O'Callaghan, Niall Hayes, Kevin Whooley, Richie O'Sullivan, Matthew O'Neill, Aidan Williamson.

The first prize in this month's club draw was won by John Patrick and Cillian Sheahan, Leap. The second prize went to Justine Fay, Glandore and third to Albert Wilson, Killinga. Consolation prizes were won by Michael and Alyson Tobin, Kilfinnin; the Limerick Family, Shreelane; Tom Murphy, Reavouler and Patricia Dineen, Brade.
The U16 footballers took on neighbors Carbery Rangers in the quarter final of the championship on Friday 9th September in Skibbereen. On a wet evening with a strong wing it was tough conditions for football. While the Kilmacs opened the scoring it was the Ross men who were making the early impression and they got a huge boost with a goal in the early minutes followed by some points. The middle of the first half was competitive with neither side having an advantage. Towards the end of the half the Kilmacs began to play with more direction and closed the gap with some fine points from Kevin Whooley to leave the score Kilmacabea 0-5 Carbery Rangers 1-3. With Richie O’Sullivan coming in at half time the attack was now sharper and the balance was tipped when Richie scored a goal after 8 minutes and a slight gap was opened. The game continued to be competitive to the end and while the Kilmacs were ahead they were pushed all the way and had to work very hard for the result. The final score of 1-12 to 1-4 would have been a lot tighter if the Ross lads had availed of the opportunities created. This was a good test of the resolve of the team and should stand to them.
The U12 footballers played Gabriel Og in Leap on Monday evening, 12th September. This was a good even match and while the greater balance of the visitors had the advantage at the end  the home team put in a great effort. Team Conor Nash, Chantelle French, Jamie O'Donoghue, Ellis Wilson, Ian Jennings, Damian Gore, Myles Tobin, Dara Tobin, Adrian Gore, Davina Connolly, Ashley Deane, Oisin Brown, Marie Keating, Aoife McNamara.

Result  - U16 football championship v Carbery Rangers  in Skibbereen on Friday 9th September at 6.30pm.

Result - U12 football v Gabriel Rangers in Leap on Monday 12th September at 6.30pm
Kilmacabea 5 - 9 Gabriel Og 7 - 13

It was a very busy week for largely the same group of players with mixed results. On Tuesday 30th August the minor footballers were in championship action against Castlehaven in Skibbereen. The team started reasonably well and were competitive but with no player up to the age were at a disadvantage. Castlehaven had a better balanced team and were more effective in their use of the ball.  Castlehaven had the advantage at half time on the score 1-6 to 1-2. While Castlehaven got 2 quick points at the start of the second half the Kilmacs had plenty of possession and in fact didn’t concede another score for almost 25minutes. Unfortunately the possession wasn’t resulting in scores and the gap wasn’t closed. Inevitably the greater strength told in time and Castlehaven were able to close the game out in the last few minutes on the score 1-12 to 1–4. While the better team won it didn’t reflect effort the Kilmacs had put in.
On Friday 2nd September the U16 footballers played Sam Maguires in the Rebel Og West championship in Rosscarbery The team started brightly and made the early running. A key moment in the game was in the 11th and 12th minute, wen  after two incisive moves by Sam Maguires were foiled by two outstanding saves by Matthew O’Neill and a later chance was cleared off the line by Odhran Connolly. With the Kilmacs in control of possession and able to convert the scores, the game was effectively over well before the finish.
While it was a comfortable win it proved costly with injuries to two key players for the U16 hurling county semi final against Clondrohid played in Newcestown on Sunday evening 4th September. With the team having to be reorganized and playing into a gale force wind it couldn’t have got much worse with the concession of a goal in the 2nd minute. Despite being under pressure the team was working hard and kept the half time score to 0- 2 against 1-8. In the second half, in difficult conditions, everyone put in a great effort and the scores were now coming to reduce the gap. Unfortunately as will happen when a team is pressing they were caught for a break away goal on the 7th minute. Things got worse in the 14th minute with the conversion of a penalty and trying to adjust to the loss of a player another goal was conceded. In a testament to the spirit of the players they never gave up and almost pulled off a miraculous recovery in cutting the score to 4-9 to 3-8 when time ran out on them. It was a super effort by the players despite all the obstacles.

Latest News 30/8/11

The U16 hurlers played O’Donovan Rossa in the Rebel Og West championship final in Rosscabery on Thursday 25th August in what turned out to be a cracker of a game. With a very strong and mobile team it was clear that O Donovan Rossa were going to put in a good effort to land glory and after the early testing each other out, they were forcing the pace and had a goal in the second minute. The Kilmacs were working very hard but were under immense pressure and while they set about reducing the lead, were not being allowed to play with any fluency. By the 21st minute the Kilmacs had managed to edge in front but were hit for another goal and two points coming into half time. The half time score was Kilmacabea 0-8 O’Donovan Rossa 2-4. It looked as if it was all to do after playing with the fall of ground and that the advantage was with the O Donovan Rossas. The Kilmacs had a couple of early opportunities to reduce the gap at the start of the second half but these were put wide and it looked as if things may get worse when O’Donovan Rossa edged further ahead with a point in the third minute. Amazingly after their first half performance this was to be their last score of the game. Positional changes made at half time for the Kilmacs began to have the desired impact and the team began to play with a better balance. The key score came in the 4th minute when a movement was finished to the net by Declan O’Sullivan. With the addition of a couple of points the Kilmacs nosed in front. The game was now there for either side and both sides were creating chances. The Kilmac defense had stepped up their performance and were marking much tighter. The game had opened up and play was much more open. O’Donovan Rossa had their chances but were thwarted by the work of the Kilmac defense. When they did breach the defense they were met by a superb save from Diarmaid O’Callaghan in the 15th minute and also hit the post in the 17th minute. Niall Hayes at center back was now completely dominant and it seemed as if the ball was attracted to him like a magnet when it came any where in his vicinity. The Kilmacs were able to weather the storm and pushed on to close out the game on the score 1-14 to 2-5. This was a very encouraging victory and was earned by heart and team spirit as well as ability and effort. The team was strong down the spine and all the players in the key positions played exceptionally well but it was the performance of the flanking players that ensured this result. The cup was presented to team captain Declan O’Sullivan by Aidan O’Rourke chairman of  Rebel Og West. Team Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Odhran Connolly, Darren Whooley, Euan Tobin, Niall Hayes, Aidan Williamson, Martin Collins(0-8), Tiernan Kerrisk(0-1), Declan O’Sullivan(1-1), Shane McDermott, Kevin Whooley(0-1), Richie O’Sullivan(0-3), Kevin O’Donovan, Ruairi O’Mahony, DJ Glanton, Gavin Daly, Ciarán French, Daniel O’Sullivan.

This made up for the disappointment some of the younger players had when they played St. Marys in the final of the U13 hurling championship on Wednesday, 24th in Clonakilty. Having already played twice there were no illusions about the gap between the teams. On a very difficult night with a deluge midway through the first half the advantage was always going to be with the physically stronger and technically more advanced and skillful opposition. Despite this the Kilmacabea team put in a super effort and for a long period it looked as if the score might be a lot tighter than expected. Unfortunately the concession of some quick goals just before half time served to dampen the spirit. The team battled gamely to the end and while the score may have reflected the difference in standard between the teams it did not reflect the effort the young lads put in and is very tough on the youngsters who are enthusiastic for the game. Kilmacabea 2-4 St Marys 9-10.

Youngsters are resilient but this group, through  no fault of their own have suffered a number of big defeats over there short careers and it certainly raises question about the seriousness of the attitude to developing hurling in areas that do not have a hurling tradition. The youngsters will get over the defeat and move on but unfortunately will have lost the “gra” for hurling and the damage done is long term. This is an unfortunate side issue associated with the new strategic policy with decisions and grading being made centrally with little understanding or knowledge of local situations.

The U10 footballers had a very enjoyable day under the guidance of Timmie O’Mahony when they played in a blitz in Pairc UI Caoimh also on Wednesday 24th.
The U12 footballers played Castlehaven on Monday 29th in the league and while they were beaten it was a very positive display with players showing a great improvement and having a much better understanding of the game.
Final score Kilmacabea 2-13 Castlehaven 7-3

Minor Hurlers win West Cork Championship

A superb team display gives the Kilmacabea club their first silverware of the season when they defeat Gabriel Rangers in the final of the minor hurling in Skibbereen on Tuesday 16th August. In a very competitive game between two evenly matched teams the game was decided by a few key moments, the early goal by Declan O’Sullivan to settle the team, the pointed frees by Eamon O’Sullivan just before halftime to give a three point half time lead, two further points by Eamon O’Sullivan at the end of the 3rd quarter and a period of stalemate which was followed by a superb save by Diarmaid O’Callaghan.

On a fine evening it was ideal for hurling. Both sides were testing each other in the early stages and while the Kilmacs opened the scoring with a fine point from Eamon O’Sullivan, Gabriels were making the early running and had the advantage on the score board and Diarmaid O’Callaghan was equal to their test in goal. The decisive moment in the game was the goal from Declan O’Sullivan in the 6th minute. This gave the Kilmacs the edge and they were able to push on and by the 11th minute had extended the lead to 6 points. As happens Gabriels then had their period in charge and came back into the game and by the 26th minute the Kilmac lead was down to 1point. Two key scores by Eamon O’Sullivan gave the Kilmacs a small advantage at half time on the score of 1-10 to 0-10. There was no score for the first 12 minutes of the second half as the game flowed from end to end with neither side able to convert possession. The Kilmacs had missed a penalty but eventually Eamon O’Sullivan put over points in the 12th and 15th minute to break the stalemate. The game continued to be competitive but the Kilmacs were in the position of advantage and with numerical advantage towards the end were able to see off the challenge.

The final score was Kilmacabea 2 – 14 Gabriel Rangers 0 – 12.
The cup was presented to captain Finnán Tobin by Noel Coakley of the Rebel Og West Cork Board.

Diarmaid O’Callaghan had a super game in goal, dealing ably with everything that came his way and making several outstanding saves at crucial times in the game. Martin Collins and Liam Thompson were excellent in the last line of defense with nothing getting past them. Niall Hayes(1-0) was master at center back and finished the game off with his goal at the end. Finnán Tobin and Euan Tobin worked hard either side of him and never let up. Liam Cahalane(0-1) had his usual effective game at midfield. Eamon O’Sullivan(0-11) at center forward led the attack with all his undoubted skill scoring some fine points. Kevin Hayes and Oisin O’Sullivan worked hard either side of him even if it didn’t always come off. Richie O’Sullivan(0-2) was a constant threat when in possession and the Gabriels defense conceded numerous frees in their efforts to halt him. Declan O’Sullivan(1-0) worked hard and was always in the thick of things. Kevin Whooley, Denny Hayes, Liam O’Driscoll, Odhran Connolly all came on and did their bit especially when the pressure was on in the second half. Kevin O’Donovan and Aidan Williamson were also part of the panel. The satisfaction of this victory is that it was the players themselves who had committed. Earlier in the season it looked as it the team would struggle for numbers but once the group got together they realized that they could be competitive.
When these teams played at U14 level the score was not recorded such was the difference in favour of the Westerners so it proves that things can be overcome no matter what the appearances.

Minor Hurling Championship Final vs Gabriel Rangers in Skibbereen on Tuesday 16th August at 7pm

The U13 hurlers played Mizen Og in the championship on Tuesday 9th August in Ballydehob. This was a competitive game with little between the sides. With strong displays from Tiernan Kerrisk and Darren Whooley the Kilmacs had a slight advantage at half time on the score 0-6 to 0-3. With Darren Whooley getting a goal at the start of the second half the advantage was with the Kilmacs. The Mizen responded with a goal of their own but the Kilmacs were working hard and were able to maintain their advantage to the end on the score of 3-8 to 1-5. Team Odhran Kerrisk, Christy Wilson, Ellis Wilson, Jamie O'Donoghue, Tiernan Kerrisk(0-3), Ross Cantwell, Darren Whooley(2-5), Ciarán French, Myles Tobin(1-0), Karl Ronan, Jamie Ronan, Ian Jennings, Dara Tobin.
On Wednesday night the 10th the U16 hurlers played Argideen Rangers in the semi final of the championship in Ardfield. On a terrible wet night, the game took place with an enveloping mist and in poor light, it was a miracle that the ball could be seen. The Kilmacs had a strength advantage in most positions and in the conditions this was crucial. Without playing with any fluency the team was putting in a good effort.  While the game was won convincingly the team was made work hard by a young Argideen side.

The U14 footballers played Gabriel Og in the league in Ballydehob on Thursday 21st July. This was a very exciting game with both sides have their periods in front. After a very enjoyable game played in a good spirit the Kilmacs were disappointed to concede a couple of late goals that decided the issue. It was still a performance with some excellent displays. On Friday 22nd the U16 footballers were in action after a long break when they played Ahan Gaels in Leap in the league. This was a good competitive game and though the team gave them selves a bit of an opening coming up to half time they were made work all the way which should be of benefit in the long term.

The U16 hurlers played Rosscarbery in the league on Tuesday 26th July in Leap. This proved to be a worthwhile exercise. With the group not having a lot done and struggling for players it was a good starting point to see what is available and showed that there is ability within the group. It was welcome to see a number of players tog out and give very creditable performances to enable the team to field and perform and hopefully the enthusiasm and commitment can be retained in the interests of the whole group. The Kilmacs had an advantage in the central positions and this gave them the platform to control the game. This team will be in championship action very soon.

Two of last months prize winners were in luck again in the July club draw. Imelda and Annie O Donovan won the first prize. The second went to Amy and Joanne Hamilton, Glandore and third to Margaret Burke, Maulatrahane. Consolation prizes were won by Jim Calnan, Glandore; Breda Whelton, Ballyhilloe; Tim O Sullivan, Gurtyowen and Kevin McCarthy, Reavouler.
The U14 footballers took on Pedlars Cross in the championship in Ballinacarriga on Thursday 7th July. When these teams met a few weeks ago there was a distinct advantage in favour of the Pedlars. This game bore no resemblance and the Kilmacs showing true spirit and for a long time it looked as if they might hold out for a shock victory. Pedlars started strongly and were dominating early on and went they got a goal after 10 minutes it looked as if they were in a position to win at their comfort. The Kilmacs came back and playing well were back in the game and by half time were ahead by 2 points. Playing against the wind for the second half made life harder but giving their all they were still in the game going into the last quarter. Ultimately the greater strength of the Pedlars in the key positions swung the game in their favour but they had to earn it and it was another great effort from this gutsy team. The team deserve every credit. The loss of a key player for the season was a lot for a young squad with limited numbers. Final score  3 -2 to 5-4.  John Patrick Sheehan who had an outstanding game in goal suffered an injury late on and is wished well.
Disappointment was the outcome for the  Junior A team that took on Argideen Rangers in the knock out stages of the championship in Clonakilty on Saturday night 9th July. Starting slowly in both halves the team struggled to match the greater physical presence of the opposition and while a great effort was made the scores needed didn’t come. Final Score 2-7 to 2-6. It could have been much worse as Clive Sweetnam was knocked unconscious and but for the prompt actions of a few people including Ciarán O'Donovan and Kay Ronan it would have been a much more serious situation and puts it all in context. Clive is wished a speedy recovery.
The U10 footballers travelled to play Caheragh on Friday night 8th July and a great night was enjoyed by one and all including all the parents. Timmie O'Mahony and his helpers efforts are appreciated by all involved.

The U14 footballers had a busy and exciting few days when they took part in the Feile Peile na nOg. On Thursday 30th June they travelled to play Glengarriffe and gave themselves a great boost with a win on the score of 2-8 to 0-5. In the evening they were off to take part in the parade in Cork City and were among 185 teams that marched past the viewing stand at The Grand Parade that featured several dignitaries including Christy Cooney President of the GAA. Kilmacabea club was a host venue for the games played Friday 1st July involving Cill na Martra, Glengarriffe, the Scottish Development Squad and Kilmacabea. As all teams were evenly matched there was great excitement, with the result going down to the wire. Having been 4 points up going into injury time and getting caught for a draw at 2-4 each against Cill na Martra, it was all or nothing against the Scottish Development Squad in the last game of the group stage. Starting slowly and going behind early on did not dampen the lads’ spirits and raising their game, they went on to fashion a fine victory on the result 5-9 to 2-3. The final score was a little flattering, as the visitors tired towards the end of the game. This section ran off successfully and was a tribute to all the organisers, stewards and especially the catering group, who surpassed themselves in their hospitality during the day. Thanks also go to the mentors, Bart Kerrisk, Mike Gore and Sean Tobin, who prepared and looked after the team and the players’ families and the community who supported them. A special thanks must go to those who had put a huge amount of time and effort in behind the scenes in getting the event organised including Bart Kerrisk and Anne O’Sullivan with the support of Mike Nash, Kerry O’Shea, Sean Tobin, Mike Gore and all the parents. The team qualified from their group and it was off to Kilmichael to play Glanworth in the semi-final on Friday evening. Unfortunately the exertions of the day caught up with them and their fantastic journey ended there. Squad - Karl Ronan, Ashley Deane, Tiernan Kerrisk, Sean French, Isaac
O'Shea(Captain),  Matthew O'Neill, John Patrick Sheehan, Eoin O'Sullivan, Caelan O'Mahony, Dan Lynch, Darren Whooley, Patrick O'Donovan, Jamie O'Donoghue, Ross Cantwell, Adrian Gore, Conor Nash, Ellis Wilson, Ciarán French, Myles Tobin, Damien Gore, Ian Jennings, Andrew O'Donovan, Odhran Kerrisk, Gareth Whooley. It was a great experience which should live long in their memories and they did themselves proud.
Damien Gore, Aughatubber who played well with the Feile team and also represented the club in the Feile skills competition wasn’t finished yet. On Sunday 3rd July he was part of the Cork Primary Schools team who played their Kerry counterparts in the interval of the Munster Senior Final between Cork and Kerry in Fitzgerald Stadium. Another great honour for the player, his family and the club.
The minor hurlers had a good competitive game with Mizen Rovers on Monday 4th July. The team showed improvement and the benefit of games played.
Support is welcome for the Junior A team that take on Argideen Rangers in the knock out stages of the championship in Clonakilty on Saturday night 9th July at 8pm

Credit to the lads as they turned around in the second half and it was as if a different team was playing. The main activity during the last week was the Sciath na Scoil football finals which were played in Dunmanway on Thursday 26th May. All the local schools were in action on a day when a very strong wind with little heat made it very difficult conditions for playing. The girls from Maultrahane carried on the fine tradition of the school when they won their 9th consecutive title when they beat Ballinacarriga and the future looks bright for them. Glandore repeated last years success when they were successful in both boys and girls. The boys were first up when they played Lisheen in their final. It looked as if they were up against it when they were only 2 points up at half time after playing with the very strong wind. Instead they played much better against the wind with everyone playing their part and making very good use of the ball they were able to control the game and victory was theirs. The girls of Glandore took on their neighbours from Leap. Again the wind was an influence. Glandore had the upper hand and were made to work very hard before they also retained the cup. The Junior A footballers were in league action against St James on Friday 27th but had to give way on the score 1-11 to 1-7. The U13hurlers played St Marys in Leap on Monday evening but had to give way to a physically stronger and a much more skilled team technically. They kept going to the end and showed great spirit.

Kilmacabea’s unbeaten run in the league appeared to count for very little as half time approached in their first round Junior A football championship game against St Mary’s in Dunmanway on Saturday evening last 23rd April. With just one point in the fourteenth minute to St Mary’s six, Kilmacs appeared to be in deep trouble. However three well worked points in as many minutes had them back in the game by the short whistle. Turning over to face the breeze and the strong evening sun they kept up the good work and were a point ahead when Joe Collins rattled the net from some distance. St. Mary’s, 2009 champions, refused to surrender and had the lead reduced to a single point with time running out but Kilmacs finished the second half like the first landing some good points to ease into the third round on a score of 1 – 11 to 0 – 9. Despite facing the losers round the men from the twin villages could yet figure in the shake up for the Mick McCarthy Cup.

The minor hurlers took on St. Colms in Leap on Wednesday evening 13/4/11. After encouraging a few more to turn out the team had the luxury of two valuable subs. It is one thing to field a team but the effort has also to be put in. The team worked hard and surprised themselves with a decent performance. The skills may need working but with the proper application things can be achieved. After a good contest the team was victorious on the score 4-2 to 2-3 and gives encouragement going forward. It has been very busy on the playing fields
The U16 footballers played Skibb on Friday evening in the league. This was a good test and the team made the most of the luck going and were able to come away with a win on the score 6-12 to 3-7.
The U16' had to turn their hand to hurling on Sunday morning when Mizen made the journey to Leap. Even though the team was short on numbers the performance was satisfying  and showed that if the numbers turn out and with a bit of work the team will be competitive.

The Junior A footballers played Tadgh MacCartaigh on Sunday afternoon in Leap. The team got off to a very bad start and were 5points down after 5 minutes. Once they settled they began to create chances of their own and by half time were ahead 1-7 to 1-3 with the goal coming from John Christopher Keohane. Tadgh MacCarthaigh started the second half strong again and after 6minutes there was only a point between the sides. The U13 footballers had their first outing on Monday 28th when they travelled to play Clanna Gael. After a good game the young team ran out of steam in the second half and were unlucky to lose by the odd point. The display promises well for the year.
The club has entered U14 Feile football again this year and are a host club for games on the weekend 30th June to 2nd July. All Cork clubs had the opportunity as Cork are hosts for 2011. The junior A footballers travelled to Drimoleague on Sunday 20th March to play the home team in the Carbery-Beara league and produced another good team effort. Trailing at half time they put in a good second half to win on the score 1-15 to 0-10.
The minor footballers also played Clanna Gael in Leap on Sunday morning. They put in a good effort and while they were beaten on the score of 0-12 to 1-6 there was a lot of positives to be taken from the performance. There was also the important lesson that a bit of control is also critical to the well being of the whole group.
Fixtures especially for the underage section will be coming thick and fast from now on. There is now a fixtures masterplan and it is intended that games are to be played when fixed and there is very little scope for rescheduling. As this is the first year of this structure there are likely to be some difficulties to be ironed out but time will tell.
